Bible Question:
What were the rights of widows in Bible times? It seems to me that through outthe whole Bible God is concerned that the widows be looked after and not taken advantage of. Is this because, without a husband they were more vulnerable, and didn't have so many rights if they were on their own? Did this change if they widowed but had a son? Can anyone claify for me what a widow could and couldn't do, and/or recommend any good materail on the subject. Thank you. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Diomede, Perhaps the best passages from Scripture that touch upon the subject of the provision for widows are: Exodus 22:22; Deut. 26:12; The Book of Ruth; 1 Timothy 5:3-16; Mark 12:42-44; Luke 2:36-38 and 21:1-4; and John 19:25-27. As for what a widow could or could not do (expectations as far as the church was concerned), there is no better passage for study than 1 Tim. 5:3-16. It is also highly instructive to review the Gospel accounts: John 19:25-27 showing Jesus providing for Mary, a widow, while dying on the cross. The Book of Ruth is a book about widows: how they lived, what they did, and how they were viewed by society, as well as showing God's provision and ultimate grace. Blessings to you, Makarios |
