603 | What does the bible say about purgatory? | Matt 12:32 | Emmaus | 130751
skatemm, Here is the official Catholic teaching on Purgatory from the Catechism, which gives the scriptural reference. In this case Church Tradition is an interpretation of certain scriptural passages. "III. THE FINAL PURIFICATION, OR PURGATORY 1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. 1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire; (Cf. 1 Cor 3:15; 1 Pet 1:7) As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.( St. Gregory the Great, Dial. 4,39:PL 77,396; cf. Mt 12:31) 1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin." (2 Macc 12:46) From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.( Cf. Council of Lyons II (1274):DS 856) The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead: Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.( St. John Chrysostom, Hom. in 1 Cor. 41,5:PG 61,361; cf. Job 1:5)" http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p123a12.htm#1030 Emmaus |

604 | Was NT Written in Greek or Hebrew? 1 | NT general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 130667
Kalos, I do not have much to offer on the question. Only these two things. Onr of the early Church Aftheres did refer to Matthew originally being written in "the Hebrew language" and this is usally understood to mean Aramaic rather than Hebrew. I have also heard it said that the Book of Revaltion is rather rough in Greek, but when translated or tranliterated back into Hebrew it is very good Hebrew. I have never heard any other arguments about other books of the NT being written originally in Hebrew and it seems unblikely considering the audience, even the Jews of the Diasphora along with the Gentiles, were Greek speakers for the most part. This subject is really out of my league. Emmaus |

606 | what is the rapture | NT general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 130570
The English word rapture is not found in English translations of 1 Thessalonians 4:17. Rapture is a transliteration of "rapiemur" in the Latin Vulgate New Testament of St Jerome. 1 Thes 4:17 "deinde nos qui vivimus qui relinquimur simul rapiemur cum illis in nubibus obviam Domino in aera" Rapiere is the Latin root word for rape, which implied the carrying away of the woman, often in war or of necessity for wives or both. The is a famous Roman latin tale, The Rape of the Sabine Women, which is very similar to an accounts in the Book of Judges chapter 21. Emmaus |

mikec, Like all sinners, homosexuals are called to conversion. "2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,( Cf. Gen 191-29; Rom 124-27; 1 Cor 6:10; 1 Tim 1:10) tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. 2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition. 2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection." http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s2c2a6.htm#2357 Emmaus |

615 | More than one god? | 1 Cor 8:5 | Emmaus | 130353
ROGER459, You wrote "... The catholics teach three gods..." WRONG! The Catholics do not teach three gods. They teach the One Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. "The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the "consubstantial Trinity". The divine persons do not share the one divinity among themselves but each of them is God whole and entire: "The Father is that which the Son is, the Son that which the Father is, the Father and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is, i.e. by nature one God."84 In the words of the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), "Each of the persons is that supreme reality, viz., the divine substance, essence or nature." http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s2c1p2.htm#253 Emmaus |

616 | CORN in AMERICA? | Amos 1:1 | Emmaus | 130334
dat, I think you mean Genesis 41:5 not Exodux 42:5 which does not exist. A better and more modern translation than "corn" is "grain" which you will fing in the NASB on this site. "Corn" in the time of King james meant the same as grain does today. It covered a variety of cereal or grain crops. American "corn" at that time was known as maize. Emmaus |
