8421 | Why not Jesus' words in Red? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 2672
Aside from probable savings in printing cost, and possible vision problems, why are some bibles printed without Jesus' words in red? Why do, I guessing here, some people prefer Bibles printed in all black? |

8424 | Did I offend you? | Matt 12:40 | EdB | 2618
Gospelmidi, in your response I sense some issues, if I in any way offended you please accept my most sincere and humblest apology. Please excuse my tardiness to respond to the points raised, but I needed time to verify what I believe to be correct was in fact correct. The theory I presented was not my own, but I was first lead to it by a Messianic Jewish Rabbi. I was unable to contact him to verify my conjecture so I went to another very reliable Messianic Jew. That person then referred me to still another Jewish scholar and both agree that the Passover is called a Sabbath. Therefore I feel fairly comfortable in making that connection. Jews do call the Holy convocation of Passover a Sabbath. It is called Shabbat Gadol or High Sabbath or Shabbaton. Also the day before the Passover is called the day of preparation. Now as far as crucifixion taking place on Friday, let us reason together using your original premise or “Hebrew Idioms”. First let us establish some facts and then proceed from there. First we know Jesus died on the cross in the ninth hour Matthew 27:45-50. Secondly we know the on the morning of the “First day of the Week” the tomb was empty Matthew 28:1-6. Thirdly we know that Jesus said that just as Jonah was in the belly of a whale for three days and three nights so would the Son of Man be. Matthew 12:40. Now those are the facts and I think we all agree to those. Now examine the popular teaching that Jesus was crucified on Friday. The Bible places time of death as some time after 3 PM and before the next day which starts at 6PM. Let’s figure Joseph and his servants was able to place Jesus in the grave within an hour of His death. We then have from 4Pm to 6Pm or one partial day. Starting at 6PM and going through 6Pm would be the Jewish Saturday or the Sabbath. So we have 1 full night and 1 full day. Then at 6PM Saturday we now begin the Jewish Sunday so we have another full night and since the Tomb was empty on the Sunday morning sometime after 6AM we will count another partial day. Lets add it up 2 partial days (going with the idiom factor we count them as 2 days), 1 full day and 2 nights. The results would be 3 days and two nights. We are short 1 night either full or partial. Since Jesus clearly said he would be in the heart of the earth 3 days and 3 nights something must be wrong, we need at least one more night. I submit the only way we can get that night is move the crucifixion back to Thursday instead of Friday. To further emphasize my point I made the statement that if Jesus was crucified on the Friday the Jews would be violating a Holy Convocation Sabbath. The point was brought up that while that was true, however the Romans held no respect for the Sabbath and the they were the ones that crucified Jesus. Scripture is very clear here, the Jews were active participants in the Crucifixion. Furthermore just walking from Anna’s house to the Temple to Pilate Quarters then to Herod’s Palace then back to Pilate and finally to Golgotha would have more than violated the allotted Sabbath steps. To say nothing of holding a trial on a Sabbath or to stage what I think we can all agree to be a demonstration. Finally a point was made that we have to study and understand the culture of the people at the time a book is written to get the full understanding of the message the book is trying to convey to it’s reader. I think this is exactly what happened. Early church scholars with little or no knowledge of Jewish tradition read that the Jews were anxious to get the men down from the crosses because of the forthcoming Sabbath. Not being aware that Passover and Feast of Unleaven Bread were Sabbaths they assumed it was the weekly Sabbath that was being referred to. Hence we have church tradition. I realize this issue has been a topic of many ongoing debates and will probably not be settled until Jesus Himself sets the record clear. Men far wiser and more learned than I have taken both sides of the discussion and it truly doesn’t effect our salvation one way or the other. I presented my thoughts on the subject so that others could, if they so decided, use it as an answer to the question about what appears to be a conflict in the Bible’s account of the Crucifixion and Resurrection story. I certainly did not to do it to challenge you or to use it as an occasion to attack you. Again if I have caused you any offense please accept my apology. |

8425 | 3 days and 3 nights and Sabbaths | Matt 12:40 | EdB | 2320
There is still a minor problem. Lev. 23:5 defines the Passover. It also defines Sabbaths or other Holy Convocations. From reading this we can see that the Passover is called a Holy Convocation or day of rest. Also note the day after the Passover which is the Feast of Unleaven bread is also a Holy convocation or day of rest. For Jesus to be crucified on Friday and buried and have the women go to the grave on Sunday would mean that Jesus was crucified on a Holy Convocation Day or Jewish Day of rest. Could the Sabbath talked about in the scriptures really be the Feast of the Unleaven Bread a Holy Convocation? Jesus is a fullfillment of OT designs. I believe Jesus' trimphal entry into Jerusalem was on the 10th of Nisan, or the day of the "Selection of the Passover Lamb". I believe his death was on 14th of Nisan, the day the Passover Lamb is killed. At twilight of that day begins Passover. Jewish days run from 6pm to 6pm. Let's place Jesus' trimphal entry on 10th of Nisan or our Sunday (Palm Sunday). Then the 14th of Nisan would span our Wed and Thru. I submit Jesus was really crucified on Thrusday right before the begining of Passover, the following day was a Holy Convocation or Sabbath the "Feast of Unleaven Bread", the next day would be the weekly Sabbath. Therefore the first day the Women could get to the tomb was the first day of the week Sunday. (You really need to plot this out on paper overlaying our days over the Jewish days) Placing Jesus' death on Thursday would eliminate the problem of the 3 days and three nights. Also the fulfillment of the feast would be accomplished. But one problem remains the scriptures say Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples. There is two explainations for this none of which I can document. The first, I'm told there was conflict between the Jews as to when months started. Some would go up on to high places to see the new moon others would wait in front of the temple. I'm told the ones that used the high places were a day ahead of the ones that didn't. The second, I'm told there is a Jewish provision for travelers to celebrate Passover on the eve before passover so that they could arrive at their distination before the Holy convocation of Passover and Unleaven bread came into effect. While I admit both of these are reaching I still have to believe Jesus' death coincided with the killing of the "Passover Lamb" and that was right before twilight on the 14th of Nisan. And since all of these days are Holy Convocations or Sabbaths, I maintain we are confused by the term Sabbath Day in the crucifixion story. Looking for your thoughts. |

8426 | Define the word "cult". | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 2132
I never realized until I read Prayon's response, which I believe is a very concise synopsis of both HolyGman and my own earlier responses, how easy it would be to take our definitions and turn valid ministeries into cults. Let me demonstrate Point 1 Revelation supercedes the bible - could not both the calvinist and arminianism view of election and the arguments that go with each be considered to be using information that supercedes the Bible, particularily by those that hold opposing view points? Point 2 redefining Christian Termininology - practically any discussion on the trinity, baptism, Holy Spirit, or Gifts of the Holy Spirit reveals people talking about the same thing but using different terms or talking about the different things using the same terms. Point 3 Exclusitivity - Almost any demonination fits this to some degree. Wouldn't the need to be a tither for church membership fit this? Aren't the need for total immersion baptism, being spirit filled or not having been divorced also points of exclusivity commonly found in the church? Point 4 Authoritive leader - tense, strong willed, charasmatic - Isn't that the description of notable men like John MacArthur, John Maxwell, Billy Graham? Point 5 Strict, unreasonable rules - See point 3 and tie expulsion from the church to the breakage of any of those points and viewed through liberal eyes would seem harsh or excessive. I'm not saying any of these points are wrong. I think there needs to be different factors to determine whether a cult is a cult. It is now far to easy to use our own definitions against us. For forces that oppose religion to make us look like the bad guys. We see this fight right now in some countries where the "orthodox" religion is trying to have various demoninations and ministries outlawed. |

8427 | Bible has 1188 chap's, cntr is Psalm 118 | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 2129
Your answer may be wrong if there is 1188 chapters an even number then the middle must fall between chapters not on one, and this only is works if your counting chapters. If on the other hand your talking books there are 66 and the middle is between Micah and Nahum. If your talking verses there are 31102 and then the middle falls to Psalm 103 verse 1 and verse 2. I'm not going to count the words so I have no idea where the middle would fall if you based it on words. Now consider chapters and verses are man made and the books are man arranged, and will paint a different picture of providence, but I still like Psalm 118. |

8428 | what does the Bible say about divorce | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 2079
“For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong,” says the Lord of hosts. “So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.” Malachi 2:16 Now you take it from there!
8429 | Define the word "cult". | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 2078
The definition as given by Walter Martin in his book Kingdom of the Cults - Bethany House Publishers is "any religious group which differs significantly in some one or more respects as to belief or practice from those religious groups which are regarded as the normative expressions of religion in our total culture." I believe this definition was taken from Bergen. Walter Martin added, "A cult might also be defined as a group of people gathered about a specific person or person's mis-interpretations of Scriptures." As Paul put it "As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!" Gal 1:9. A definition of a cult should also include any teaching or group of people that try to base salvation on works apart from grace. The biggest hinderance in dealing with cults is definitions, they use Christian terms but they mean entirely different things. Jesus to the Mormon is a spiritual brother of Lucifer. Jesus to the Jehovah Witness is a incarnation of the Angel Michael. Jesus to the Islam is a great prophet. Jesus to Bahai is another incarnation of God along with Buddha or Muhammed. Before we can fully understand a cult we must understand the definitions of the terms they are using.
8430 | Why not recommend SBForum to others? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 1994
In my opinion this forum can do as much harm as it does good. Read it over you will find all kind of opinions, ideas, conjectures but no real conclusions. You will find quotes from some of the most outlandish books. A new Christian and even some mature Christians may come to the conclusion that the writings of Bahia, or Urantia have some credence. Or that the books of Enoch or Thomas are books kept hidden to foster the teachings of the church. While your looking at the responses notice also how the forum is structure is fractured with many responses taking bunny trails leading to dead ends. There needs to be some moderation so that each discussion is lead to a logical conclusion, if a subject is such that a mutually agreeable conclusion can not be reached then there should be a summation of the various points. There is a real danger of people being lead astray by opinion, conjecture and mis-information. God did not give us his word to speculate over he gave it us to live by. If these discussions don't lead to a better understanding of God's Word but only lead to thoughts and philosophies of others then it is serving a wrong and very dangerous purpose. I probably said more than I should have and for that will apologize.
8431 | STILL entertaining? | Revelation | EdB | 1500
I'm not sure I have anything against Tim LaHaye, but I do question his series of books Left Behind. They paint a picture of excitment and adventure during a time when I think the world will be turned unside down. People will be living in despair and fear, begging to die. It will be a dog eat dog kind of existance. I also question how many non Jews will be saved. I think the real thrust of the 144,000 will to evangelize the Jews. If people will not accept Jesus now while it is easy to do, I question how many will when it will cost them their lives.
8432 | STILL entertaining? | Revelation | EdB | 1497
I fail to understand why Jack Van Impe or Hal Lindsey's were even considered. Both have made predictions (prophecies??) that have failed miserably. Lindsey wrote a book called 1980 Count Down to Armageddon that called for the return of Christ 1988. Jack Van Impe jumped on the Y2K disaster and how it fit into Revelation and 'End Times'. Repeatedly he told how the world was going to collapse. He raised unfounded and I might add unrealized fears of many. He was cautioned about it by both computer experts and experts in 'End Times', yet continued. After that debacle, anyone who would listen to anything he said is looking to be mislead. Get away from the sensational look at books by Dr Stanley Horton pub. Gospel Publishing House, Dr. David Jeremiah pub. World publishers, Dr. John MacArthur pub Moody or Nelson. Another book you might want to look at is Revelation Four Views edited by Steve Gregg pub. Nelson. I agree with the one name given J. Vernon McGee, you can trust him. |

8433 | May I Ask Again... Bible Software? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 1494
Dear EveryHome, I have used just about all of the Bible software products on the market and currently own Nelson's Bible Library and NAS Bible Library both of which are in LOGOS format. I also own Wordsearch by Iexalt in STEP format. My favorite is Wordsearch. To me it is the easiest to use, easiest to transfer scriptures into word processors, and has an added feature of audio pronunciation of Strong's concordance Hebrew and Greek words. Going along with this feature is one called 'Easy For You to Say' which pronounces all the names of biblical people, places and objects. Makes life easier when you run into one of the unfamilar names and you are not sure of the pronounciation. I will admit the Logos format has far more titles. The question that must be asked are you building a collection or are you looking for useful tools?
