161 | What scripture quotes name of "beloved d | John 21:20 | Aspiring Overseer | 91468
George, Is this what you seek? John 21:20-24 20Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His breast at the supper, and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?" 21Peter therefore seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?" 22Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!" 23This saying therefore went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?" 24This is the disciple who bears witness of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his witness is true. 162 | Does Christ stand alone for salvation?? | Acts 4:12 | Aspiring Overseer | 33333
Gentlemen, You are correct in saying that Christ is the only way to salvation, however, you miss the mark in offering the popular adage, "works do(es) not save us". Scripture tells us that those who believe in Him should not perish (John 3:16), but it is clear this is conditional. Even the demons believe and shudder. Those who believe have eternal life, but those who disobey shall incur the wrath of God (JO 3:36). Further, Hebrews 5:9 tells us that Christ is the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. Sounds like there might be some effort involved, eh? Finally, Paul instructs us to "work out your salvation with fear and trembling" in Phil 2:12. This is curious if all we must do is "accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior" by "having faith" in His existance. Paul |

163 | Die without the revelation of the Gospel | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 180845
Finder, You asked, "How could the ones that are not reached with the message be morally accountable to a message they never heard?" and "Could this then be true that these peoples are saved without ever hearing the message of the Gospel?". We know that God is specific in giving us but one way to be saved, so to surmise that pagans might be given an alternative route would be easily refuted. We also know that God many times caused complete nations to perish due to their failure to worship Him. Although the example you give would, indeed, be circumstantial, if we assume that none from the prior generations had ever received the gospel, could it be they had not asked? In other words, is it not possible that none questioned the truth of their pagan religion? Instead of imploring God for the truth, they set off to find it through man-made avenues. If this was the case, why would God send one of His priests to someone who is not seeking? Prov 8:17 17"I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me. NAS Zephaniah 1:1-6 1:1 The word of the LORD which came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, 2 "I will completely remove all things From the face of the earth," declares the LORD. 3 "I will remove man and beast; I will remove the birds of the sky And the fish of the sea, And the ruins along with the wicked; And I will cut off man from the face of the earth," declares the LORD. 4 "So I will stretch out My hand against Judah And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, And the names of the idolatrous priests along with the priests. 5 "And those who bow down on the housetops to the host of heaven, And those who bow down and swear to the LORD and yet swear by Milcom, 6 And those who have turned back from following the LORD, And those who have not sought the LORD or inquired of Him. " NAS Conversely, if just one person questioned the religion of their pagan ancestors and prayed to God for the truth, would not God have been faithful? Either that individual would have left their country in search of the truth or the truth would have been brought to them. Thus the answer is not that God makes different rules for different people, but that the individuals failed to sincerely seek God. Acts 17:25-27 26 and He made from one, every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times, and the boundaries of their habitation, 27 that they should seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; NAS Best regards, AO |

164 | Are there isolated evidences for this | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 180852
Finder, I do not mean to be dense, but could you please restate your point(s) with respect to the following: "But this kind of hypothesis rules out the unique evidences that single individuals out of pagan societies could really have a fair opportunity to be saved. There doesn't seem to be any pattern from among the pagans that could justify that these isolated individuals had the same fair choice as the evangelized do. Which makes the following verses sound contradictory: " Thank you. AO |

165 | The ignorant didn't need to repent | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 180927
Finder, Thank you for your patience. I believe my "fog" this morning was self-imposed due to a multitude of tasks at hand and, possibly, an insufficient quantity of caffeine. Without a doubt, we must dismiss the possibility that a pagan, if faithful "to the light they have", will be saved, even if they hear nothing of Christ. Romans 10:14 14 How then shall they call upon Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? NAS So without hearing they will not come to the truth, which they must achieve to enter Christ's Kingdom. As to “multiple paths”, either the Bible is the truth or a complete lie. The Apostle Paul’s instruction is clear that if even he would have preached a different path, he would have stood condemned. Galatians 1:8-10 8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed. NAS As to why there is little or no evidence of these conversions, I would suggest two possible reasons. One, they are likely exceedingly rare. Old Testament examples show the percentage of righteous to pagans as extremely low, i.e. Sodom and Gomorrah, the Flood, etc.. Second, God likely causes each soul to be born in just the proper environment to fulfill His Master Plan. Just as Pharaoh was placed in his position because God knew Pharaoh would never obey Him, so God likely places the souls of those who will not obey Him in these highly indoctrinated societies. Conjecture, but in the "big picture", is it man's position to ask God why He did not save past generations? The Lord demands I serve Him; not the other way around. P.S. Does Acts 17:30 say that God has "saved" those who were ignorant of Him or simply that He will not punish them for their ignorance if they repent? If the later, would not the repentance be the seeking of God in accordance with knowledge (of the truth)? Best regards, AO |

166 | What choice do pagans have | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 181131
Finder, Please forgive my delayed response. I appreciate your sympathy for those that are lost. We must remember that regardless of their circumstance, all people have a choice to seek God. The pagan who acknowledges that someone created the world around him, if that individual is sincere, will seek to find the creator. If not, they will follow the societal customs of their group. Their choice has not been denied them. As for Romans 10:14, a vast number of people did hear the gospel, but refused to believe. In fact the gospel has already been preached throughout the entire world. That certain societies have disobeyed and long since forgotten the word of God is not God’s fault. Romans 10:18 18 But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world." NAS Everyone who seeks God in accordance with the truth will find Him. To have very large populations be condemned is not surprising and is unquestionably fair. Who are we that we should question the actions of God? AO |

167 | Can other writing be God inspired? | Acts 20:7 | Aspiring Overseer | 50500
A few verses to consider regarding the completeness of the Bible: Deut 4:1-2 4:1"And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I am teaching you to perform, in order that you may live and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. NAS Deut 12:32-13:1 32"Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it. NAS Josh 1:6-8 7Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. 8This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. NAS Prov 30:6 6Do not add to His words Lest He reprove you, and you be proved a liar. NAS Matt 28:19-20 19"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. " NAS Rev 22:18-19 18I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. NAS God apparently does not expect to add to His own word. Additionally, several verses speak for the completeness of the disclosed master plan of God. Jude 3-4 3Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. NAS Jude 5 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS Acts 20:27 27"For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. NAS 2 Peter 3:1-2 3:1This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. NAS 1 Cor 14:33 33for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. NAS Keep praying for guidance and God will be faithful. |

168 | Can other writing be God inspired? | Acts 20:7 | Aspiring Overseer | 50531
God tells us His word is inspired; complete and without error. He then warns His people not to add or take away from anything that He has commanded. If we accept God's word as truth, then we know that He would not contradict Himself by inspiring a writer other than those whom He used to pen His Holy Writ. Thus, it is simple to determine which books or articles are inspired; none. P. S. Argueing that books other than the Bible are inspired really is the breeding ground for allowing that various "holy" works of other religions/denominations have equal footing. |

169 | Accept Jesus? | Acts 24:3 | Aspiring Overseer | 88411
There are several verses which are used to support "accepting Jesus", but the motive is always for furthering the arguement of a "something for nothing" religion. If.. (have you ever thought about how many "if's" exist in scripture regarding salvation?).. If, you wish to get to specifics, see John 14:21. Does this need interpretation? AO |

171 | Having yet not knowing one has | Romans | Aspiring Overseer | 90043
Rom 8:1-11 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 5For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so; 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you. NAS Can a person be in Christ and not know it? Can a person set his mind on the things of the spirit if he does not have the HS? Can a person set his mind on the things of the spirit unless he is in Christ? AO |

172 | Having yet not knowing one has | Romans | Aspiring Overseer | 90104
George, Originally you asked, "Can one have recieved the Holy spirit and not know?". In your last response you said, "Once again, I will reveal my ignorance by stating that although currently I have no biblical foundation for the following statement, I believe there is one. I (think) they, the Holy Spirit and The Holy Ghost are two completely different things.". Which question do you wish to discuss? If the first, consider if it is possible for a person to be "in Christ" and not know it. In other words, to be a Christian and not know it. The passage from Romans discusses a Christian's position as walking according to the Spirit, or in other words, God's will. If a person does not know how to become a Christian, then how will they know God's will? Does this make sense? AO |

175 | What if you don't obey that command? | Rom 6:4 | Aspiring Overseer | 56412
If a Christian does not love God, will he get to heaven? Is it possible to get to heaven without loving God? John 14:15-16 15"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. NAS What commandments do we need to obey? Just those which seem right or all of them? Does not a person obtain his reward by obeying ALL His commandments; baptism included? Heb 5:8-10 9And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, NAS He is the source, IF, we obey Him. Acts 5:31-32 32"And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him." NAS We have the HS, IF, we obey Him. 2 Thess 1:8 8dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. NAS Those who do not understand His word and/or chose not to obey Him WILL suffer retribution. Matt 17:5 5While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!" NAS To all who read this, keep praying for guidance and God will be faithful. |

176 | What if you don't obey that command? | Rom 6:4 | Aspiring Overseer | 56702
I agree that salvation only is obtained through Christ. What most people fail to understand is that salvation involves more than passive belief! Christians must obey God's commands for His covenant to apply.
177 | What if you don't obey that command? | Rom 6:4 | Aspiring Overseer | 56779
Hebrews 5:9 says, "And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation. Christ becomes to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation. God made this very gramatically clear. |

178 | What if you don't obey that command? | Rom 6:4 | Aspiring Overseer | 56781
You wrote,"Many people are under the impression that salvation depends on what WE do: WE must excercise "saving faith; We must be baptized; We must love God; WE must obey His Law; We must etc., etc., ad infinitum." Are you saying that a person may be saved who does not "excercise saving faith; or be baptized; love God; or obey His Law"? |

180 | What are the "works of God"? | Rom 6:4 | Aspiring Overseer | 56790
What are the "works of God"? Jesus told the multitude that they must take action to perform the work of God. John 6:26-29 27"Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man shall give to you, for on Him the Father, even God, has set His seal." 28They said therefore to Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" 29Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent." NAS In order for them to believe in Him whom He had sent, what must have been needed? First they would have had to had a knowledge of scripture (OT). To obtain this they would have had to commit themselves to study (action). Second they would have to demonstrate or prove their belief by their actions (i.e observance of the Mosaical Law and teaching). They did neither as demonstrated by their response to Jesus requesting further proof from Him! They failed to understand; as most today. Belief in Christ must always be accompanied by action if it is to have any value. James 2:19-20 19You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. 20But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? NAS James 2:26 26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. NAS Phil 2:12-13 12So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; NAS |
