Greetings Cantymantwo, The Bible mentions fasting before the day of atonement (Lev. 16:29,31; 23:27-32; Num. 29:7) and four other yearly fasts that were observed after the Babylonian exile (Zech. 7:5; 8:19). In Jesus' time, the Pharisees fasted twice a week (Luke 18:12). There are many reasons to fast: in times of sorrow (1 Sam. 31:13; 1 Chronicles 10:12; 2 Sam. 3:35), during national crisis (2 Sam. 1:12), for people's sins (Ezra 10:6), for conquest (Ezekiel 29:11-13), in need of courage (Esther 4:16), for repentance (Joel 1:13-14), and even in times of joy (Zech. 8:19). But even though fasting has little value in itself (1 Cor. 8:8), it is effective both in worship (Acts 13:2-3) and with prayer (Daniel 9:3). If we don't lose our insincerity (Zech 7:1-6) or fast with the wrong intentions (Acts 23:12-13), we can remember the real meaning of fasting (Isaiah 58:3-7), and follow the example of Jesus (Matt. 4:1-2, 6:16-18). Should we fast 40 days like Moses (Deut. 9:11-18)? Is there any limit as to how many people can fast at one time (Mark 8:1-3)? Can men fast with animals (Jonah 3:7)? Let us remember that there is always a time to eat and a time to fast (Luke 5:33-35) as long as you don't lose your appetite due to anxiety (Acts 27:33-36) or become weak (Psalm 109:24). In that case, you would be humbled by fasting (Psalm 35:13) and probably should eat a loaf of bread. Blessings to you, Makarios |
