2 | Why was Doeg's position mentioned? | 1 Sam 21:7 | Makarios | 42458
Greetings Searcher! Perhaps Doeg's position is mentioned because Samuel will write about him later in 1 Sam. 22:9,10. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3 | Why was Doeg's position mentioned? | 1 Sam 21:7 | Searcher56 | 42473
Makarios, While I know Doeg will be mentioned in the next chapter, I think it is strange to mention his position. What about the fact that David was -alone ... he was a leader of men -hungry ... he had eaten at the king's table -jobless ... as a harp player and soldier ... and being a shepherd is something he was good at. 4 | Why was Doeg's position mentioned? | 1 Sam 21:7 | Makarios | 42476
Greetings Searcher, While it is true that David was fleeing from Saul and ate the consecrated bread, he was not yet King of Israel, even though the Lord had chosen him to be so after Saul's death. I believe that Samuel is simply giving us a description of Doeg and his position, since others are also described (1 Sam. 21:1; 22:5,20) by either their profession or their lineage. I believe that Samuel included this 'background information' simply to give us a link to the events in chapter 22, where one of Saul's trusted officials (Doeg) gives Saul a reason to kill Ahimelech. Without knowing that Doeg was a 'chief shepherd', or one of his trusted servants, then we miss out on knowing why Saul did not at first question this servant who was bringing him this important strategical information. The answer to that, of course, is because Saul trusted his chief shepherd to support him. Thus, we also gain a little bit of insight as to the relationship between Saul and Doeg, of whom Saul may have handpicked himself as the keeper of his flocks. Blessings to you, Makarios |
