At that time the city gate was the location where the Elders, and Judges sat, see Ruth Ch 4 verses 1-6, this will give you the picture. Lot being a respected member of the comunity was therefore included with thoes who sat in the gate. It was a place of authority, and judgment, rather like a courthouse in our society. In Matthew 16:18, "and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it", here Jesus is saying that all the power that satan has will not prevail against the church. |
