NASB | Ruth 4:1 Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, the close relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, so he said, "Turn aside, friend, sit down here." And he turned aside and sat down. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ruth 4:1 Then Boaz went up to the city gate [where business and legal matters were settled] and sat down, and then the close relative (redeemer) of whom Boaz had spoken came by. He said to him, "Come over here, friend, and sit down." So he came and sat down. |
Bible Question: What position did Lot hold in Sodomite society if he "sat in the gate". |
Bible Answer: At that time the city gate was the location where the Elders, and Judges sat, see Ruth Ch 4 verses 1-6, this will give you the picture. Lot being a respected member of the comunity was therefore included with thoes who sat in the gate. It was a place of authority, and judgment, rather like a courthouse in our society. In Matthew 16:18, "and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it", here Jesus is saying that all the power that satan has will not prevail against the church. |
