Hi, I gave my life to Jesus in 2004, I prayed the prayer and believed that we have sinned.... I want to follow Jesus, as for the past week I've been reading His word daily I think almost a week anyways everyday. What are we supposed to do, if we believe and want to follow him? Are we supposed to be baptized? Because I was baptized when I was first born as a baby but Jesus said we need to be born of "water and spirit". So can someone please give me Jesus wants us to do? Because if were followers aren't we supposed to go out and teach his word to all? We can go to church and do this, but as I watch and see stories of the bible of people who were following Jesus, none of them really went to church, they all went and claimed his word to others. It makes me think I'm supposed to go to places around where I live, but is this right? Nobody does it everyone stays in church, or I should say not very many goto public places and teach, it's like everyone goes to church, so does this mean is this where i'm supposed to go? I don't just want to go and listen after I have herd his word, I want to do his will, but I don't know how. I read his word, but I get great knolwedge, but I don't do anything after that. So can someone help me with this? Thank you brothers. Amen |

Hello Jason, Some good questions; I hope my answers match. Baptism was (and is) a symbol for repenting of a life of sin and turning to God. You tell the world by this that there is something different. See the book of Acts for examples. Frankly, if one did not want to be baptized after understanding that, I would question his salvation. As for going out and teaching, let's put first things first. The example of the Lord (and later his apostles) was to proclaim the good news to those in the world both publicly and privately. After that, they were discipled in small groups or one-on-one. In the Lord's case, he taught the disciples for a time, then sent them out. He brought them back together for more teaching then later sent them out again--basically a "learn then do" cycle. After Pentecost, local churches were established for worship, prayer, teaching, and fellowship (Acts 2:42). The discipling happened within that context, but they still continued going out to share the good news with the world. The model is not to bring people in to hear the preacher, which has become the norm for the modern church. I hope that helps. Steve |
