1 | help me understand Gods harsh punishment | Bible general Archive 4 | yburnette | 220306
In Exodus 4, God has already chosen Moses to lead people out of Egypt, however, Moses does not follow a command of circumcision so God is going to kill Moses for this. I understand we have to follow the commandments, but does it really mean that God was going to kill Moses. That seems pretty harsh. It seems to me that during that time period, punishment was very harsh. Could it be that it was just the people's perception that they would be killed because that was how things were done back then? I'm confused because I believe God to be loving, but this God from Exodus seems less loving but more judgmental - my way or the highway. Please help me understand.

Hi, jburnette... Welcome to the forum! I will have to follow this up with another post -- I am sitting in a waiting room using my phone. :-) We do not make conclusions about God based on what He does -- we draw conclusions about what he does based on who He is. In Him, Doc |

what I'd like to conclude here is that Moses only feared death (not necessarily that God was going to kill him) if he didn't do what he was told. I conclude that God gave Moses another opportunity to obey him and he obeyed.

God's day to you, yburnette, and welcome to the SBF, It is not harsh, God demands perfection. I think of this of being perfect, that is obeying God always, except for one time. That one sin would keep us out of Heaven. Moses disobeyed, this once, at least ... so he didn't get to enter the Promised Land. All the others did sin more, but God doesn't grade on a curve. God demands perfection. Joshua and Caleb were exceptions. Searcher |
