Your question, G-e, is not so simple as you say. It is. quite frankly, loaded -- meaning that it is freighted with presupposition -- because of the way you asked it. Here in essence is what you asked. You asked why would one of God's elect waste time arguing about Arminianism or studying Calvinism. You mentioned that you had made a brief study of each, and brief it must have been, since you didn't learn how to spell either. But there are Christians on both sides of the aisle, Calvinists and Arminians alike, who would take sharp issue with you about the wasting of time thing. The majority of registrants on this Forum use study tools, many of them in fact -- study Bibles, commentaries, concordances, dictionaries, and a variety of other reference works. And few if any of us believe that sola scriptura means "just me alone with my Bible." We all of us need teachers, both living ones and those who have gone before us. To learn what the saints of old have to teach us is as wise as trying to reinvent the wheel for ourselves is foolish. ..... There can be no substitute for feeding on the word of God. But there is a world of help available from the saints, living and dead, that can guide us and teach us as we feed. They in sharing with us the insights that the Holy Spirit shared with them, can help us extract more nourishment from the word of God. ..... My friend, the ancient creeds and confessions of the church didn't happen overnight, nor did the great systems of soteriology which you appear to hold in low esteem. They were, all of them, born of the careful study, fervent prayer, and sustained toil, tears, and sweat over many years by the saints of God. Who are we brash moderns, whose vision is limited and whose understanding so often flawed, that we dare think that the wise counsel of our fathers is no longer relevant? --Hank

I am sorry I am not a scholar and dont know how to spell very well. I dont know what soteriology is either. I know Jesus Christ is my saviour. What if some of those teachers of old were wrong. One of these two is right and one is wrong as they oppose each other in nearly every way. So some of the wonderful old saints were wrong and some were right. That was the bases of my question. Why study and try to learn from sources that could be wrong as one of these two are. Even you will admit how different these two are. I am sorry I said "wasting time" and I was wrong to ask it that way. I really thought it was a simple question and now wonder do people spend years studying such things. They are free to do so. Also I am somewhat amazed at how complicated and deep some people try to make the scriptures. As a new christian, in these trying times why not rest in the the truth of the bible and Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.I do. I also like a good concordance to find verses. Anway I will not spend my time pouring over or studying these as I personally see no need. |

Very well, GE. I see no earthly need to pursue this issue further with you. ..... One side note I would like to make, however. On March 27 in your Post 185733 you asked what soteriology meant and that same day in Post 185742 Doc told you. Now here you come on April 12 saying you don't know what soteriology is. It causes me to wonder whether you pay any attention to the answers you receive from the good people on this Forum. Pardon me please if I am wrong in my observation, GE, but it seems to me you derive some comfort in not being a scholar yourself and seeing no need for scholarship. Moreover, you express amazement at "how complicated and deep some people try to make the Scriptures." Friend, no one needs to exert any effort in trying to make the Scriptures deep. The Scriptures ARE deep. Did any rational person ever believe or assert that the Author is shallow? Even though God, as John Calvin aptly put it, talks to us in baby talk, His words still take the keenest of human minds to the end of their tethers very rapidly. We stand in absolute awe of the might and majesty of the transcendent God of all creation, with whom, said the psalmist, there is none to compare (Psalm 40:5). ...... "My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8,9). ...... It is vain to try to put God in a box and unspeakably vain to try to re-image Him in our image, though some do. --Hank

Thanks. Also I remember someone gave me a description of what sorteriology is. To me it is still just a big word. And all the knowldge in the world is useless if you dont have love. For those who want deep spirital knowldge, no one can learn about God unless God gives them such. The bible nor knowldge saves anyone. Jesus Christ does. For me it is simple. Jesus Christ is my Lord and Saviour and his mercy and grace endures forever. And I agree with you. WE, are the creation, GOD is the creator and he does as he pleases. Thanks again!! |
