steve r I can only assume your referring to the reformation. However the reformation didn't change how the Bible was taught as much as it changed how people looked at religion. Before the reformation the "church" developed doctrine, set the standards and lead the way. In some cases incorrectly and in error. After the reformation and the 'age of enlightenment' people began deciding for themselves what doctrine they needed to follow and what standards they wanted to live by. This gave rise to great diversity and is one of the reasons we have so many Protestant denominations. Also during the reformation teaching against Judaism became the very popular. This resulted in the lost of the understanding of basic Jewish cultural and religious precepts that the Bible contained. The early church had an understanding of these Jewish precepts and were able to integrate these into their religion. However many were lost to church after the reformation and these issues became mysterious stumbling blocks to those that refused to consider looking to Judaism for answers. We are just now beginning to once again understand the importance of all this and we are now beginning to bring them to life once more within the church. |

In 1456, Johannes Guttenburg made the printing press. All of a sudden, peasants were reading, and learning the bible. Before, they just believed everything the church had told them. One person, martin luther, posted 95 complaints on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany in 1517. In 1521, He was excommunicated by the Pope. Because of this, the Protestant Reformation began. Unlike the split between Catholic and Orthodox in the Schiscm Era, the protestant reformation broke off into many groups such as Methodist, Baptist, Episcopal, etc. Sorry for spelling errors. |

PESHTRACK16 I'm not real sure why you posted this to me, however thank you. You gave a good synopsize of what took place however some important elements are missing. It wasn’t as cut and dried as all of that. One of the biggest factors that came into being was the change in human philosophy. People felt that they were able to chart their own course over having it charted for them. If you remember this time period is also known for revolutions and overthrowing of various governments, it was a time of social unrest. The reformation was fueled with political and social issues as much as it was with religious issues. The church had become a political power and many of the reformation wanted nothing more than to wrest this power from the church. Martin Luther as a priest became disenchanted with the direction the church was taking and attempted to change that course. He became a pawn in the political upheaval and much to his dismay found himself instead of effecting change rather becoming a divisive factor in church. The split between Rome and Constantinople or as you put between Catholic and Orthodoxy was more a power play, who would be Pope. There were two Popes and both wanted total control. They were fighting over issues such as who was first in various processions and such. Eventually the bickering lead to a split that was widened even more over issues of service order, icons, marriage of priest, calendar year, ancient manuscripts and Rome’s refusal to come to Constantinople's rescue when they were under Muslim pressures.
