Hi nealgreen and welcome to the forum, Your question Romans 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. I would suppose, as usual, that your question is about the word hate as used in the passage? The word hate, or MISEO in the Koine Greek, is what is known as an “anthropopathisum.” It attributes to God, a human characteristic that God doesn’t actually have, but for the express purpose of understanding the feelings and function of God, words of accommodation are used, such as hate. Actually God isn’t able to do the things for Esau the way He can for Jacob because of God’s perfect character and the fact that Esau hasn’t placed himself in God’s keeping through unbelief. Jacob trusted in and believed in God and as result God is able to do the most for him. Jacob believed in the coming Messiah and looked forward to the time when God was going to send Him. On the other hand we look back at when the Messiah came and we even know his name, Jesus. If one doesn’t trust in God’s Messiah or Christ there is nothing God can do for them. The difference would be on God’s part, in human terms, like love and hate. Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Everyone isn’t a child of God, as is so commonly suggested. The key to being a child of God resides in the person of God’s Son Jesus and having total undivided faith in him. Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. John 1:11-12 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. [12] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Another way to look at Romans 9:13 would be to use the words hot and cold; they being opposite in nature. God is hot towards those that trust in His Son Jesus the Christ and very cold toward those those aren’t relying on Jesus and the work that He did for them on the cross. I hope that I haven’t confused you! Have a great day, CDBJ |
