You're correct, there were only two verses where that specific phrase appears which are 1 Tim 6:11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 2 Timothy 3:17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Since both of them are from Paul and they're directed to Timothy, we can infer that Paul considered him to be such a person or a man of God. So what were the qualities about Timothy that made him stand out and be selected by Paul for such an honor. We also know that Paul considered him to be "son of the faith" as indeed, Paul saw him as his only son on this earth. We know that Timothy had Godly parents and we know that he was a student of God's Word. He was endowed with miraculous powers from the laying on of Paul's hands but of course that's not really applicable to us today. We know that Timothy submitted himself as a grown man to being circumcised when he didn't have to but he did this with the same attitude of Paul. He apparently wanted "to be all things to all people to win some." From this I think it's a perfectly solid conclusion that to be a man of God is to "imitate Paul as he imitates Christ" from 1 Cor 11:1. So a man of God must spend much time in prayer to God; he must spend time in study of God's Word; and he must spend time dispensing in his life, what he reads in God's Word, like the Apostle Paul did before him. Finally, a man of God like Paul should be able to say throughout most of life Phil 1:20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. Did I leave anything out? What do you think about this subject? God bless. --Rowdy |

Hi Rowdy, Your thoughts and Scripture references are excellent and compare and match well with the question about men of God. If anything was left out, it would be the spirit of a man of God. What kind of spirit are we of? Your Philippians passage talks about the Spirit of Jesus Christ in verse 19 and Philippians 2:1goes on and says, "If therefore there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose." So, like I said, if anything was left out of your excellent post it would have been mention of the Spirit. And I, as one interested in pronouns would like to go on in Philippians and talk about this Man of God who emptied Himself. But going back to Philippians 1, can we as fellow believers be united in spirit (soul, harmony of feeling), intent on one purpose, stand firm in one spirit and/or Spirit? That is Paul's hope. Philippians 1:27. From the heart, Ray |

In answer to your question, I like to think we can be united but only with much prayer, discussion and a whole lot study of God's Word. As you know so well, there's a tremendous amount of diversity in this, our God's world and we all are naturally and humanly inclined toward our own way so we must see ourselves as seeing things God's Way. Now the toughest thing for us as His children is which things/topics in the Bible to agree on and which of those are left for us as options. That's the 100 billion dollar question or some other huge unimagineable sum. I'm glad we can agree on this topic and you did bring up some excellent additional points. God bless you, dear friend. --Rowdy |

Hi Rowdy, You wrote that "Now the toughest thing for us as His children is which things/topics in the Bible to agree on and which of those are left for us as options." As a counter of pronouns, I would say that the toughest thing is to agree on the "things/nouns of Deity" topics. For this topic for instance, are we to stand firm in the spirit or the Spirit? Are we speaking about spiritual things or the Spirit? Or, looking at your post, are we studying God's word(s) or God's Son (the Word)? Are we looking at God's Way (the Son) or the ways and things of God? [I would write in lower case about God's word and of seeing things God's way.] Further, are we desiring to look at the man of God and his ways or shall we look at the Man of God who is the Way; even a new and living Way? I would have to let you be the expert on capitalization of key words throughout the Bible, as you've devoted a rather large amount of your time and effort to the subject. I'm afraid I'll just continue being a student and hopefully a man of God as best I can. Again, I rely heavily on God's Grace as most all of us do. For that I am so eternally grateful. But you do give one pause to think and consider. God bless you, dear friend. --Rowdy |
