i am thinking of buying one or more bible commentaries. which commentaries are available, and what are they like, how in debth about different things are they, and what are their strengths and weaknesses. as of right now, i only know of three commentaries on the whole bible that seem to be of any value: matthew henry's commentary, the jerome commentary, and the oxford commentary. are there others? what are they all like? | ||||||

hrothgar What is on the internet is books out of copywrite. That means they are at least 20 years old and if they sold very well at all the copywrites were probably renewed once or twice, thus making them 40 years or older. I find John MacArthur's Commentary up to date and hard hitting touching on subjects that effect us today. He is in the process of writing them and some far has many New Testament books completed. You can either buy the books or get software copies for a reasonable price. Since the set is not yet completed you may want to get his Study Bible which is a like a mini commentary until the set is complete. I also enjoy the down to earth answers found in J Vernon McGee's Thru the Bible commentary set. Again they are fairly current with todays problems and questions. I stay away from some of the older commentaries as many times their dealing with problems and questions that just aren't asked today. Matthew Henry maddens me sometimes how he avoids the controversial subjects and goes by way of China to answer some of the more mundane questions. However I do yield to his wisdom and love for the Word. EdB |
