1 | Gender-neutral NIV | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 32516
This was attempted four or five years ago and called the Readers NIV. It was stopped in it's tracks by the outcry of the various denominations. The Readers NIV evidently came out without gender changes. However there was British version that did contain the gender neutral changes. I believe there was even a promise that they would stop and not continue any work on a gender neutral Bible. Promise broken? I personally never cared for the NIV because of it’s treatment of the personage of the Holy Spirit. Many passages could be construed to make the Holy Spirit an “it” rather than a person and third part of the Trinity. When I wanted a paraphrase I turned to NLT published by Tyndale, which to me was superior to NIV in all aspects. While the NIV holds little interest for me, I see this as another attempt to reach a new market rather than producing something meaningful. The NRSV which was gender neutral was never received and that fact became a major reason for the ESV. EdB |

Ed, here's how the publishers addressed your "Promise broken?" question. In the face of salvos of protest from many sources, the publishers pulled their plans to replace the current NIV with a gender-neutral revision. Now they are attempting to justify the introduction of Today's New International Version (TNIV) by saying they intend to keep the current NIV on the market. Interpret that anyway you wish, but it sounds to me like they have learned how to speak in the all-to-familiar double-talk of Washington politicos. --Hank

Dear Hank, Greetings in Jesus' name! Personally, I think it is just another exercise in 'political correctness' and worldly marketing. It is interesting to note that CNN.com had this little quote: IBS communications director Larry Lincoln said some are erroneously referring to the change as "gender-neutral." "The TNIV is, in fact, gender-accurate," he told CNN. (end quote) *Gender-accurate,* huh! :-) In Christ Jesus, charis |

Charis, I suppose then that their position is that the biblical manuscripts were "gender inaccurate" and thus needed correcting. Well, I suppose we modern mortals with feet of clay have grown a good deal smarter than God was when (He, She, It, They) -- which is politically correct? -- wrote the Bible, eh? --Hank

Dear Hank, Of course, as one that believes in the Tri-une nature of God, 'They' is PC! :-) (The 'Oneness' folks are in a pickle!) In Christ Jesus, charis |
