1 | How will I hear God's answer? | James 1:5 | azurelaw | 179691 | ||
You say: ......Most often it's in a still, small voice..... Why? Dear Joanna, you are not the only one I heard of such saying. Is it really always the way God speaks to us? Why in small voice? I would be glad to see your quote of more relevant scriptures. I don't think God often chooses to speak to us in small voice but with shouts and cries instead (see Proverb 1:20 to 21). Thanks for your help. Azure |

Dear Sister Azure, You make a good point. Neither of the Testaments teach us that there is some kind of inner voice that quietly whispers instruction to our spiritual ears. Such notions are often taught in American churches, but they arise because people think they can build doctrine on narrative. But the instructions of Scripture are to accurately handle the Word of God (2 Timothy 2:15). The Scriptures tell us what is true, correcting our false ideas and improper behaviors, training us in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). The Holy Spirit enlightens the minds of the regenerate (Ephesians 1:16-18) in careful study of the Scriptures, not a kind of divine, mystical communication. The primary means by which the Holy Spirit -- the third Person of the Trinity -- speaks to believers is through the Scriptures (John 16:13-14; 1 Corinthians 2:9-12). The carnal heart of men seek mystical experiences, believing that God will honor their worthiness as though they are one of the prophets. The hard intellectual work of diligent, daily study of the Bible and the teachings of the Church is too arduous and mundane. In Him, Doc |

I came across this verse in devotion today I thought that I would share since I think it has to do with what we are talking about in this thread. Isaiah 45:18-19For thus says the Lord--Who created the heavens, God Himself, Who formed the earth and made it, Who established it and did not create it to be a worthless waste; He formed it to be inhabited--I am the Lord, and there is no one else. I have not spoken in secret, in a corner of the land of darkness; I did not call the descendants of Jacob [to a fruitless service], saying, Seek Me for nothing [but I promised them a just reward]. I, the Lord, speak righteousness (the truth--trustworthy, straightforward correspondence between deeds and words); I declare things that are right. I think that no matter how the LORD speaks to you that if you are seeking for his wisdom and righteousness you will know it is the LORD that is speaking to you. When I am seeking the LORD, I read His word and pray asking for understanding and guidence and I keep reading until I hear from Him. hope this helps Joanna :) |
