1 | jesus born prior to earth? | Heb 13:8 | RElderCascade | 35460
When Jesus was born he became what He was not previously (incarnated in human flesh) and He still is what he became at the incarnation (a risen and glorified version). Is He God? Yes. Does that mean that He could be said to pre-exist? No, not as He is now after the incarnation. So is pre-existence a useful term? Not if we are talking about Jesus Christ. It is only discriptive of existing in essence as part of the Godhead. But I wouldn't use a term like pre-existence to describe any thing other than God not the incarnation.

You seem to hold that the Incarnation somehow changed Jesus' divine nature. The historic Christian understanding is that at the Incarnation, God the Son took on a second nature. He has always been God, and from the Incarnation he is also man. As the Westminster Shorter Catechism puts it, he "was, and continueth to be, God and man in two distict natures, and one person, for ever." The incarnate Jesus is not a separate entity from the eternal Son of God which participated in creation, so it is perfectly fair to say that he has always existed. His humanity has a beginning, but He does not. --Joe! |

What gave you the impression that (I said) the incarnation somehow changed Jesus divine nature?

Nothing, just trying to be precise! The Son of God did pre-exist, just not His humanity. This is what Hank believes, and it seems as if you do, too. In any case, Jesus himself attests to His pre-existence at the same time he attests to His deity, so I don't think the term is out of line at all: 'Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."' --John 8:58 --Joe! |

5 | jesus born prior to earth? | Heb 13:8 | RElderCascade | 35597
Great text from John 8. Now regarding the proper use of pre-existence; the term is out of line if it is being used of the birth of Jesus. The possibility of error regarding the question of; "birth before earth" is specifically the Mormon error of pre-existence. It must be noted that these postings from RElderCascade are written quite nearly in the third person.

RElderCascade is correct. :) So I guess you are not a Mormon "elder," then! --Joe! |

Excellent guess what gave that away? Flesh and blood did not reveal that to you..or could it. Are you aware of the unbiblical view of Jesus pre-existence in Mormon theology? When I read the question for the first time I immediately worried about some strange view that would give credence to their error. But I think its best to let everyone think it through for themselves first before I reveal the greatest error I am really leaving no room for.
