1 | jesus born prior to earth? | Heb 13:8 | RElderCascade | 35460
When Jesus was born he became what He was not previously (incarnated in human flesh) and He still is what he became at the incarnation (a risen and glorified version). Is He God? Yes. Does that mean that He could be said to pre-exist? No, not as He is now after the incarnation. So is pre-existence a useful term? Not if we are talking about Jesus Christ. It is only discriptive of existing in essence as part of the Godhead. But I wouldn't use a term like pre-existence to describe any thing other than God not the incarnation.

An addendum to my previous note: If your view be true, how do you account for Hebrews 13:8 which says that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever"? --Hank
3 | jesus born prior to earth? | Heb 13:8 | RElderCascade | 35504
I totally believe it exactly as it is written. But I ask how can one read that and conclude that it addresses the incarnation directly? How can one read that and conclude it addresses the current glorified state of our Lord? One can't conclude it addresses these things unless it become a proof text of a set of things that aren't true. So if the text is true (and it is true) it can't be talking about things that it doesn't address, “the same yesterday and today and forever”, makes no attempt to say the state of our Risen Savior is the same as the eternal Word (Jo 1:1-12). It must be talking about something else -- namely that Jesus is God and that His character and personality and eternality and perfections are permanent. He is to be relied on as God nothing less! Praise God!
4 | jesus born prior to earth? | Heb 13:8 | Hank | 35507
"Although John 1:1 is verbally parallel with Genesis 1:1 and 1 John 1:1, the contents assign temporal differences. Whereas Gen.1:1 speaks of the beginning of creation and 1 John 1:1 emphasizes the incarnate manifestation of God in Christ, John in this verse establishes the PRE-EXISTENCE (caps mine) of Christ in eternity past." --Believer's Study Bible (Thomas Nelson). "Pre-existence" may not be your word of choice, but you fail to convince me that I erred in using it in the context under consideration. So, herewith I rest my case. --Hank

Your reference of pre-existence is not misusing the term the way I have articulated a serious concern about. I have re-read what I wrote and I think you're missing my intent and you can't show me where I have told you you are erring in using the term pre-existence. So, you may need to re-read what I have written before you attempt to say I believe you have erred. Why don't you instead try to summarize what was the intent of my postings (using you own words) regarding the meaning of the "pre-existence" Christ.
