Greetings Mandy, In Matthew 6:1-4, Jesus challenged the motives of how people give. As any fund-raiser is aware, one of the biggest motivations (and temptations) for people today who give large gifts is to glory in the prestige that results. One of the best ways to ensure that people give or raise money by using the right fundraising means and through honorable motives is by giving and accepting anonymous donations (Matthew 6:3-4). That way, one's gift will not affect anyone's opinion of them either way, and the matter will stay between them and God so that God alone will evaluate their motives. I realize and admire your concern that you are afraid of possibly turning the house of God into a "den of thieves" (Matthew 21:13) by the method of fund raising that you have chosen. But according to Matthew 6:3-4, I am convinced that the Lord is more concerned with our hearts and motives of giving rather than the method at which we raise funds, even though all methods that we use in obtaining funds for His name must be righteous (Proverbs 16:8). If the method that you have chosen for fundraising is not deemed as being righteous by your church elders, then perhaps the method needs to be changed. Blessings to you, Makarios |
