1 | What does Fight the good Fight mean? | 1 Tim 6:12 | eklektos | 174007 | ||
Greetings shamrock, Welcome to the forum! 1 Tim 6:12 would be "Stand strong and endure in our Faith" Chapter 6 starts with instructions to servants and then moves along to verse 11 where Paul addresses Timothy directly, "O man of God". Paul exhorts Timothy to "flee these things", the things Paul just referred to in the preceding verses; "pride, envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings". Fight the good fight of faith, persevere in righteousness because daily we are to take up our cross. Lay aside those things that can lead a person to destruction. Hold on to these things, righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and meekness (v11), for they are profitable toward eternal life. Paul tells him to be strong in his calling in which many were witnesses to (Acts 16). Keep the faith. Flee from evil. Despise nothing but unrighteousness. The International Standard Version and the Contemporary English Version of the Scriptures uses, "fight for the faith", but this could have the wrong connotation to the meaning, "fight of faith" used in NASB, KJV, ASV. Hope I have served in some way. eklektos |

Thank you for the welcome. You have helped greatly, by confirming what I believe Fight the good Fight means. Now, can I ask you if there is any place in scripture which supports disputing or arguing your Faith on disputed biblical matters. The reason I ask is that someone very learned told me this is my Christian duty using Fight the good Fight as proof, and mentioning Spiritual Warfare, saying If you don't participate in the 'hostilities' of spiritual warfare then how are you 'fighting the good fight'? This is contrary to all my experience as a Christian. I've always believed that Spiritual Warefare is Fighting the good Fight as you've described it and I believe it to be. But I am a growing Christian of 43 yrs and must take into account that I may have missed this or not discerned it properly. And since I seem to be in the minority, I need to settle this in my heart. I'm always ready to give an answer in support of my faith, but not with hostility. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Thanks, Pat |

Hi Pat, Ephesians 6:10-14 (10) For the rest, my brothers, be made powerful in the Lord and in the might of His strength. (11) Put on all the armor of God, for you to be able to STAND against the wiles of the Devil, (12) because wrestling against flesh and blood is not to us, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world's rulers, of the darkness of this age, against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenlies. (13) Because of this, take up all of the armor of God that you may be able to RESIST in the evil day, and having worked out all things, to STAND. (14) Then STAND firm, "having girded your loins about with truth" and having put "on the breastplate of righteousness," Literally, "our wrestling" is not with flesh and blood... The wrestling match of Paul's day was two opponents, in a ring, the one that loses is the one who either touches the ground, or steps out of the ring. In other words, the one who fails to stand. Our spiritual warfare it to not let these dark powers throw us down. We are to stand. We do not have to defeat Satan, or the powers of darkness, because Jesus has already done that. What we have to do is STAND. Fighting and arguing is directly addressed in the Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:23-26 (23) But refuse the foolish and uninstructed questionings, knowing that they generate quarrels. (24) But a slave of the Lord ought not to quarrel, but to be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing, (25) in meekness teaching those who have opposed, if perhaps God may give them repentance for a full knowledge of the truth, (26) and they having regained senses out of the snare of the devil, being captured by him to do the will of that One. We are not to do it. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
