1 | Did Paul have 'Christ's attitude'? | Phil 2:5 | Bill Mc | 18131
Ray, thanks for your response. Phil 2:5 is a great verse! Do you think Paul was stating a view similar to Christ's when he said in Gal 2:20 - "It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me."? Or how about Phil 4:13 - "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me."? What do you think Paul meant by these statements? Do you think that he was expressing his reliance upon Christ similarly to Christ's reliance upon His Father? Paul did encourage us to have Christ's attitude. How would this play out in our lives? 2 | Did Paul have 'Christ's attitude'? | Phil 2:5 | Ray | 18305
Hi Bill Mc, Your post to me seems to expect an original thought from me. You are expecting me to think? Oh well, I'll try. Gal 2:20 says when we apply it to ourselves, that we have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer we who live, but Christ lives in us. I believe that that speaks of the Spirit of Christ. Galatians 3:5 talks about the Spirit that was provided and works among us. But for Phil 4:13 and Him who strengthens me I think of the Man, Jesus Christ. I think of Him as my head, for 1 Corinthians says "But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman,..." 1 Cor 11:3, "...God is the head of Christ". Ephesians 5:23, "...Christ also is the head of the church." So I see myself and the church as subject to Christ and Christ loves the church. Ephesians 5:24-29. But we are members of His spiritual body. This headship thing however is one "seniority" basically. The husband and wife are equal, but the man came first, so he has headship or seniority. And I say they are equal, but the woman is the weaker usually. The father comes before a son in human terms. We can relate that to the Father and Son as far as mutually assigned headship is concerned. But the Father and Son are equal. And they are One. This mystery is great just as much as the reference to Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:32 Anyway, I'm working my way to your question of reliance; for it revolves around equality of the Persons of the Trinity. John 5:17 says "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working." So He was making Himself* equal with God. 1 Corinthians 11:3, "and God* is the head of Christ." Philippians 2:13, "...for it is God* who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." Phil. 2:9, "For this reason also, God* highly exalted Him,... ***I don't know if you see what I am comparing or not. I see Christ doing the things that He has seen the Father doing. He is equal to and does not rely on the Father. He has come in the Father's place and authority. But He doesn't want to grasp the headship. Phil 2:6, "...who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied (Himself), taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men." But on Him is bestowed the name which is above every name. We should have the same attitude of equality as far as our marriages are concerned. Although equal with her husband she should not try to grasp the headship. For the church that has this attitude, we should stand firm in one Spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. Phil 1:27 Phil 2:5, "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ* Jesus." The *'s are for comparison, the () for oneness. Later, Ray |
