My version would be exactly what is said. I do think the Amplified gives a very good rendering of the context it should be taken in. Paul lists all the things that would be considered foolish. They are in verses before and after verse 17. We should stay away from these foolish behaviors. Instead we should strive to understand the will of God. This is where I really like the Amplified. In understanding we should "firmly grasp" what his will is. I like the rendering because it implies the truth that understanding of itself is worthless. We must grasp it - holding on to God's will for our lives with relentless fervor. Seek understanding and then put it into practice. When He reveals a truth to us from the scriptures we must put it to use! What, otherwise, is the good of all our understanding? Prov 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. Prov 10:23 Doing wickedness is like sport to a fool, And so is wisdom to a man of understanding. This last verse gives a very good explanation of the relationship between foolishness and understanding. If we truly desire understanding and seek it then wisdom will be like a sport to us. Acting in wisdom will be a joy to the person that has true understanding. |
