1 | Has God already chosen who he would save | Eph 1:4 | DocTrinsograce | 125222
Matthew 22:14 says that many are called but few chosen. Romans 8:30 states that the called are saved. Job 21:30 states that the wicked are preserved for judgement. God does the converting, we simply proclaim the truth. We take the gospel to a dying world because we are commanded to do so by the Lord. (He preached to and healed some of the very people who shouted "crucify Him!") I recall a quote by C. H. Spurgeon, "If God painted a yellow stripe down the back of every elect person, I would go around London lifting up shirt tails. Since He has not chosen to do that, I must preach to all men." I hope this helps. |

Hi DocTrinsograce, I was just now reading your post and comparing Matthew 22:14 with Romans 8:30. I don't know exactly what your point was in your first paragraph, but it led me to consider the word "called" in these passages. Matthew 22:14 has the idea of "being invited" rather than being called. In other words, "many are invited, but few are chosen." In fact, there is a marginal note in my Study Bible of [Or, invited]. The Study Bible edited by Spiros Zodhiates has it with Strong's #2822. Romans 8:30 with its "called" is Strong's #2564. So just because one is invited does not mean that he/she is called and chosen. The comparison that I got from the passages is that the Pharisees in Matthew seemed to be concerned with the image of Caesar, but Romans would have us predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son. That is the "kind intention which He purposed in Him", Ephesians 1:9. Ephesians 1:10, NKJ, "that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance,..." I hope that adds to the discussion. From the heart, Ray |

Interesting thoughts, Ray. The scripture is so rich! The truth is so vast. One thing we know about the truth of God: it is not given easily, but one must be willing to dig for it! We often do not understand how extremes can be simultaneously true -- for example that God is slow to anger (Ex 34:6) and His wrath is quickly kindled (Psa 2:12). God has given us a coherent message -- He Himself is coherent -- so the answer is there. Sorry, I wish I had more time to dig around in this... but I'm about 8 chapters and a paper behind in my class. :-( (How did I ever make it through college when I was kid???)
