This is how I understand faith and works. Faith is confidence in something whether that is God's promise or the wisdom of the world and/or the lies of Satan. To have faith in God's word concerning any given subject requires something, because faith mixed with the word produces. The woman with the issue of blood said that if she could only touch the hem of His garment. The centurion said "speak the word only and my servant will be healed". Faith that believes God and acts accordingly produces the results God has promised. The question is not really how faith and works go together, but what are works of faith. Are the efforts to manipulate God or are they acts of belief. When one goes to the car and inserts the key, faith is working. (not faith in God's word necessarily but faith that the key inserted properly will produce the results that correlate with the action because we have maintained the vehicle properly). Works are not efforts to make something happen such as taking the car key and trying to crank the bicycle. One may say, 'but I am acting in love trying to crank this bicycle. Yes, but not according to the bicycle manual. One might say, 'I am 'doing the word' but the Word and faith are not mixed with love.(God's kind of love, not our carnal love)Faith works by love. God's word is the guidebook to life and when we learn from the teacher(the Holy Spirit)-faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God- and follow the manual (the work of faith because we love God and know we are loved of God)the results God (and we)desire will come. Faith in God and His word come through the revelation of the Holy Spirit. If we accept and act on the Word (be doers and not hearers only deceiving our own selves) because of the love of God in our hearts, God's will be manifest in our lives. Faith in God's word from a heart of love produces the desired result. Faith-Word-Love of God Romans 10:17 Gal. 5:6 Hebrews 4:1-3 |

Graceful Your answer is based on sound logic, but it presupposes that we know what God’s will is. Your faith is not in God but rather in what you have determined in your mind to be what God’s word says about your situation. Which may or may not be the true. Let us take this very hypothetical situation (I hate doing this, but here goes). Let us say a person loses a job. We then pray that the friend gets the job back (God gives us the desire of our heart). The person then goes back to work and there is a horrible explosion and everyone is killed. What have we done? We have exercised our faith not in God but rather what we have determined to be in God’s word and prayed our desires not God’s. Would it have been better to pray God’s will? Isn’t that faith in God? Trusting God to accomplish what needs to be done in our live to best suit his desired pleasure. EdB |

Hi Ed. Hope you had a blessed Christmas. You said," but (my answer) presupposes that we know what God's will is." My answer... 1 Corinthians 2:15-17 We (who are spiritual) have the mind of Christ. And also the Spirit of truth has been given to each of us to lead us and guide us into all truth. God's word is His will and when revealed to our spirit by His Spirit we will know His will. You said, " Your faith is not in God but rather in what you have determined in your mind to be what God's word says about a situation. Which may or may not be true." My answer.. 1. God's word and God are inseperable. faith in His word is faith in Him. 2. Our total purpose in life is to seek to know and do God's will. Surely we will miss Him some times and probably a lot more often when we are told we can't 'know' His will. But if we do not give up, we learn to know His voice. If we learn early in the small stuff, we will hear in the big stuff. Your hypothetical..You said "the friend gets the job back (God gives us the desires of our heart).. No...God gives us the desires of our heart when our heart is in line with His...I said...." One might say, 'I am doing the word' but the Word and faith are not mixed with love." The desire of our heart in line with the desire of His heart. Your hypothetical is somwhat confusing because you implied God gave the job back at the prayer of the friend regardless of God's will. God does not answer prayer against His will and no where have I said He does. I have said that when a child of God has received direction in their spirit by the Word and the Holy Spirit they are to act accordingly and God will give the results. You said, " Would it be better to pray God's will?" You probably meant 'God's will be done' as in 'I don't know God's will'. As i pointed out before, God did not send His Spirit and His word for us to wonder around in uncertainty, but when we are baby Christians there are times when we need to seek Godly counsel of elders, but we should be maturing in our personal relationship that we learn to hear for ourselves. No, I believe it is better to learn to hear God directing you through life by His word and by His Spirit. I can't really respond to your hypothetical because there are too many unanswered issues such as.. 1. Is this person mature in the Lord and familiar with the voice of the Holy Spirit? Because if they were listening they would have heard God's direction. 2. It is more likely that someone who does not believe they can hear from God to be fooled by the enemy. Here is a jobless person facing all type of fears and oppression not knowing God's will and maybe not knowing God would direct him, trying to place his faith in circumstances...the job becoming available again. How can that be better than hearing from the Holy Spirit? Scripturally we are directed to seek to know God's will/word and obey by faith. God does not fail, we fail. Our culture does not want to tell our children that they are wrong. Our culture does not want to injure our children to 'compete' because they may lose. Let me say this in closing. We as God's children may miss the mark occasionally, we may listen to the wrong spiritual voice sometimes, but the Word assures us that if we continue to seek, we will find, if we continue to knock it will be opened, if we ask, we shall receive...and that He will hold us up. When we stop believing God in one point, that unbelief begins to contaminate all the Word in our lives. We are competing with an enemy who does seek to steal, kill and destroy so if we do not contend in faith in God's word, the enemy will steal it all. God Bless |

Graceful My Christmas was very busy but also very enjoyable. I hope you had a great Christmas. Now that you have added all these conditions especially not violating God's plan/will to what you said earier I will agree with your answer. Your right about hypothetical situations because there are too many unanswered questions. Do you know God's will? Does God ever do things we don't like? Does God ever put us into situations we don't want to be in? If something bad happens in our life is it because of God or because of the enemy? Will God allow Satan to afflict us? EdB |
