Reply to CDBJ. I wish I wasn't so busy. I knew that when I started this "Religions of the World" class that I would have to keep on top of things. I probably should be into the Word a lot more than what I am. But that doesn't mean that I don't have knowledge of the Word. I have actually been studying the Word for a good number of years now. However, I have not studied it in a school or college. From first grade to twelfth grade I went to public schools. Religion was actually taken out of the school system a while back. When I knew that I would be studying "Religion of the Worlds", I actually got the book ahead of time. I started reading the book for pleasure only. I wasn't taken notes at the time. I only got so far before class started. When class started , I reread some of the chapter I had already read. This time taking notes. It takes a lot longer to read a chapter when you are taking notes. We had first studied Hinduism. I got between a 74 and an 80 on the first test. We just got finished studying Islam. I think I did better on that test than I did on Hinduism. Oddly enough we were suppose to be doing Buddhism next. But Islam doesn't go into Buddhism. If you think about it Hinduism goes into Buddhism. So now we are reading Christianity. This particular chapter I didn't get to read ahead of time. So I just finished reading it. I didn't take notes. Which means now I need to go back and take notes. I wish I had gotten to this chapter ahead of time. Why? Because of the subtitles under "Christianity." Which is in Chapter 8 of "The World's Religions" by Huston Smith. The book is seet up as such. You have an introduction to every chapter. Then under Christianity you have "The Historical Jesus." Not every religion is historical. Christianity is a historical religion. "The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me." "By the Spirit of God I Cast Out Demons" "Thy Kingdom Come, on Earth." Then you have a topic called "The Christ of Faith" Under the same chapter as Christianity. Then you have subtopics of that topic. "He Went About Doing Good." "Never Spoke Man Thus." "We Have Seen His Glory." Then a new topic "The End and the Beginning." "The Good News" "The Mystical Body of Christ" "The Mind of the Church" "Roman Catholicism" "The Church as Teaching Authority" "The Church as Sacramental Agent" "Eastern Orthodoxy" "Protestantism" "Faith" "The Protestant Principle" All these are covered under Christianity. The book mentions the "Casting out of Demons " early on in the chapter. You can see this by the way I listed the topics and subtopics. The idea was that the teacher wanted us to define demon. I didn't come close to the answer until page 359 under "The Protestant Principle . It is the last sentence of the second paragraph. "For this, according to tradition, is what the devil is: the highest angel who, not content to be second, was determined to be first." Which brings me back to what I was researching. Which was "What is a demon?" I suppose a question that might precede that is "Who is the devil?" And then the answer falls into place a lot more. It is what Doc and others have been telling me . Something I sort of heard before. That the devil and one third of the angels were cast out of heaven. So a demon is a fallen angel. So Huston Smith's book "The World Religions" isn't necessarily a "kind book". Although it has a lot of information on different religions. One of the Pastors at "The Lowell Assembly of God" gave me another book to read called "The Compact Guide to World Religions by Dean C. Halverson, General Editior World Religions Specialist for Internaqtional Students INc." This is a very orderly book. And it is kind on the student. "The World Religions" by Huston Smith has gotten some praise. YOu can read the comments on the back of the boook. For example "The New YOrk TImes Book Review says "Intelligent, clearly written...reveals the spirit of each faith." Library Journal says "The best one-volume book on world religions." If I wasn't taking a "Religion of the World's Class" this might have been a book I would have started and put down. It is heavy reading. You can only take in so much at one time. Interestingly enough this is the only book we are using in my "Religions of the World Class.," So there are no supplements. The teacher says if we don't understand a word to look it up. And of course if I get stuck, I am one to research. Which is good. It might just keep me sane. I know this is a christian forum, but since a particular book I am reading in class started this whole thing, I thought I would mention just what I thought of the book. It isn't that it is a bad book. It is very informative. It just isn't kind to its readers. You read it like you would read a novel. That is sort of the way it is set up. |

Greetings, Nearly all who read the Koran end up as Moslems the sad part is that very few that read the Bible actually end up as Christians they might even attend a church with a Christian name. They might even go so far as to say they are Christians but "true Christianity isn’t a religion, it’s a relationship", and one "must" actually be born into God’s family by a work performed by God. 1 Peter 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, Speaking of Jesus, John 1:13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." The Bible gives a strong warning. Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen." Have a great day, CDBJ |

Mom - Sunday School teacher - way back when doesn't attend church anymore. people "turned off" by organized religion. This latter statement -- said to me by someone I go to class with. I read bible stories to my children. My children know that I am very much into my bible. Well, I use to be anyway. turned off by people religion. This was one reason I left the Church of the Nazarene. I now attend the Lowell Assembly of God, friend, Jean , goes there. that I wish I had been somewhere else. Other times simply busy. study my bible a lot more than I do now. The course is "bringing me back" . My prayer life comes and goes. I use to pray a lot more than what I do. do pray. baptised? yes. seventeen years old. SDA Church. The SDA Church believes that Ellen G. White was a prophet.I left that church and moved on to another church. Which was a pentecostal church. church disbanded.In actuality I have been to a lot of different churches. As a congregationalist. baptist church. SDA Church. "Victory Chapel" , a pentecostal church. Catholic Churches. Pawtucketville Congregational Church. Church of the Nazarene. e Lowell Assembly of God. not satisfied. I don't know what it is. They fell that head knowledge should go to my heart. test back in Islam. 78. My first test and my second test together add up to my midterm. I need do better.Spring break is coming up. This will allow me to take some notes on the Chapter on Christianity and Buddhism. I was doing something right in the first test that I didn't do in the second. oral presentation today. The teacher liked it. I don't know exactly what I got on it. But I am glad it is behind me.I got double prints. thinking about giving the HIndu TEmple some of the pictures. I am wondering if I really want to go back to the Temple. The other thing would be if the Church wanted some of my pictures of educational purposes. I am not sure exactly how good my report is. concentrate on architecture, how we felt, colors, smells, and our experience. We needed the address where the temple was. I had two photo albums in class. One I passed around the class. The other I kept up front with me.We also were told to bring in some things of our religion. I brought in two bibles. King James Version. Revised Standard Bible. copywright was 1901. I also brought in two hymnals. I only passed out one. Pilgrim Hymnal. And I had a combination hymnal / story book from "Ideals" . This book not only put in popular hymns, but gave the story behind each hymn. nice pictures. membership book from when I belonged to the Church of the Nazarene. Although I didn't become a member. And some information pamphlets on the Lowell Assembly of God. There were two reference books. Crudense Concordance. I usually like my Strong's. Vine's . (I am to lazy to put the full name of the dictionary.) Isn't that awful.Some of these I passed out in class. Others I did not.So I am at the halfway point in the class. Our class has dwindled down a bit. Last week we had seventeen students attend. This week it was only ten. I don't know how many students we originally had in class. But like I said, the class has dwindled down.I have a research paper do. I am thinking of doing it on Confucianism. But I don't know what specifically. I was thinking of a broader subject. Which was on woman rights. But that would engulf many religions and might be too broad. Next time we have class I need to come up with something.My book report is on a "The Tao of Physics An Exploration of the Parallels between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism by Fritjof Capra". I got the book and the CD. I was playing the CD in the car on my way to work. Like chapters in a book.I was thinking I wanted to cover some of the subjects in the my "REligions of the World book" that we weren't covering in class. That way I would have some knowledge of different things.This course is now causing a lot of controversy.Someone in the class today didn't seem to understand that Protestants don't do the sign of the cross.Also, they were telling me that in the old testament there wasn't a heaven. I told them that there was always a heaven. That the devil fell out of heaven and brought one third of the angels with him. She was trying to bring up the idea of purgatory. Something Catholics believe in but Protestants do not. And she was trying to say that there was some sort of purgatory in the old testament before Christ was crucified.Perhaps I am not grasping a concept here. But if I can ask a question without getting into too much trouble, I will procede to do so.How were people judged in the old testament? What is the concept of heaven and hell? |

4 | Concept of Heaven and Hell in OT | 1 Cor 10:20 | Timaeus | 184688 | ||
There are these three references of heaven and hell that I could find in the OT. These have both words in same sentence, there are others as well. Job 11:8 [It is] as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? Psa 139:8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou [art] there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou [art there]. Amo 9:2 Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down The doctrine of purgatory is found in (I think) the book of Maccabees. Protestants do not include this book in the (divinely inspired) canon. The Catholic church at times referred to the apocrypha as deutero-canonical, or the second canon. You have a long road ahead of you, a lifetime of study trying to decipher all religions of the world. Remember, Paul said that knowledge puffeth up. The main thing to remember is the definitive difference between Christianity and all other religions. That is the fact that we are the only religion where the leader dies for the salvation of someone else, and was not out to improve his own lot. Blessings, Tim |

I was talking about my "Religion's of the World " class with someone at work. She could not believe that the teacher didn't know certaina things. For example Mrs Shah didn't know that Protestants don't do the sign of the cross. When she found out that this was true she replied "You don't believe in the cross." Glory! The idea of purgatory in the old testament came from someone who claimed to be protestant. Although she was trying to figure out the sign of the cross. Maybe my classmates don't read their bibles. Mine is pretty well read. I was suppose to bring in something to show my religion. I brought in a number of things. Two of those things were bibles. ONe was a King James Version copywrite 1983. The cover was off of it. The other was a Revised STandard Version 1901. The cover is a little ragged, but it is in better shape than my KJV. I also brought in two hymnals. Mom use to be a choir director. She had a "Pilgrim Hymnal" from when she directed at the Congregational Church. I also brought in a hymnal/story book from Ideals "Guideposts." And two reference books. All this plus information for my Oral Presentation which included two photo albums. I am glad you clarified that purgatory was a Catholic thing. That was what I thought. I also know that the Pope is Catholic. But my teacher talks as if the Protestants are under the Pope. I had this same trouble when I visited the HIndu Temple. A particular Priest was said to be like "the Pope." But it might have been said more personally than that. Like "your Pope." So the joke and/or outrage of the day is that the Pope has become Protestant. I mean Catholics and Protestants both believe pretty much the same thing. Right? So why not group everyone together? I do remember studying the Protestant REformation at one point. And if I am correct Protestants are under the Pope. We kind of "broke away" from the Catholic church. |

Hi again Lon, I think you are studying very well, there are very important issues that should be cleared up, for your own understanding. You want to be able to own your belief and not guess or wonder. No, Protestants are not under the Pope because the pope claims to be the head of the church, as well as the vicar of Christ. The pope has proclaimed the tradition of the church to be co-equal with Scripture. The Bible claims that Christ is the head of the church, which is Christ's body. The Holy Spirit is the vicar of Christ. (vicar means mouthpiece) I think it is sinful to usurp authority. I believe God's Word to be the final authority in all manners of doctrine and faith. (cf 2Tim 3:16) For, when tradition conflicts with Scripture, we are forced to choose between the teachings of two sources. That is where the Protestant cry of "Sola Scriptura" came from, because the Roman Catholic Church was placing too much emphasis on tradition, and Scripture was forced to take a back seat. When the Bible says we are saved by grace and not by works, and the pope says we can be saved by either grace or by works, who do you believe? Since the doctrine of purgatory is found not in the divinely inspired canon, I feel that it is a man-made doctrine and can do nothing for my relationship with my Savior. I cannot see how the Catholic Church can exist without the doctrine of purgatory, and there are many other doctrines they espouse to that were non-existant in the early church. Martin Luther did not set out to cause a Great Reformation, he did not intend to cause any split in the church that he loved. The Holy Spirit works in the hearts of believers in order to keep the church pure. This is how the split came about, and there are now more than 400 protestant denominations and, I have heard over 4,000 non-denominational churches. This is because of man's pride and arguments over non-essential issues. Disagreements over such things as whose name are you baptized under, even by sprinkling or immersion are often unable to be overcome so another new church gets started. I have found a local church that teaches God's Word alone, verse by verse and chapter by chapter, book by book. I will pray that you can find a good church home that you can build a relationship with our Lord and Savior, and not place greater attention on religion, as the Pharisees did and were scolded for it. God Bless you in your search for the truth. Tim |
