1 | Translation of "mello" | Acts 24:15 | ausbarry | 142401
Should this not read "........., that there is about to be a resurrection of both ........."? Does our theology prevent this translation or is there a reason why "mello" is to be translated as "shall certainly be" here?

Greetings Ausbary! There is a grammatical reason why 'mello' is translated as 'shall certainly be' in Acts 24:15. According to the 'Greek English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature', when 'mello' is followed by a future infinite, it indicates the certainty of a future event. Here, 'mello' is followed by the future, middle, infitive of 'eimi'. Other examples of this construction include; Acts 11:28 and Acts 27:10. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Thanks Tim. Since "mello" seems to have a primary meaning of "is about to", is it possible that when it is followed by a future infinite that it should be translated "is certainly about to" so that the above would read " .....that there is certainly about to be a resurrection of both ...... ? Thanks. Ausbarry |

4 | Certainly about to? | Acts 24:15 | Morant61 | 142458
Greetings Ausbarry! I wouldn't translate it that way! The word isn't quite that wooden in meaning. It doesn't have a sense of immediacy (sp?) with the future infinitive. It can be translated that way in a couple of other constructions, but it can also be translated as 'why delay' or to indicate purpose in other constructions. It is actually a quite versatile word! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
