1 | Do you know this One? | Acts 17:23 | Ray | 103495
Acts 17:23, NKJ, "for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you." The Interlinear Greek-English New Testament, Jay P. Green, Sr. editor has "This (One) I announce you." So my question is, "Do you know this One?" Acts 2:36, "This (Jesus) whom you crucified." Acts 17:3, "This (Jesus) whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ." Acts 17:23, "This (One) I proclaim to you." The parentheses are mine for comparison/contrast. From the heart, Ray |

2 | Do you know this One? | Acts 17:23 | Makarios | 103563
Greetings Ray! The NKJV translation is unique in that it states, "..the One whom you worship without knowing.." All of the other translations that I have 'surveyed' have "therefore what you worship in ignorance.." I actually believe that the NKJV has a much clearer rendition of Acts 17:23, and I favor it here in Acts 17:23 over and above any other English rendition! :-) You have made an expert observation in associating Acts 2:36 and 17:3 with the way that the NKJV renders this verse (17:23)! Great post! - Makarios |

Hi Makarios, Thank you for your encouragement in my Scripture comparisons. I received one other e-mail of encouragement today and I appreciate that. I believe that "the One whom you worship without knowing" points out the importance of capitalization of Deity. It also points out the mystery present when one puts a sentence in ALL CAPS or in all lower case. I plan to write to two new members to the forum today to encourage them to put their sentences in both lower and upper cases. (Especially when studying the Holy Spirit or the spirit). The Acts 17:23 verse that we are studying has ALL CAPS for the inscription on the altar, not unlike the inscription on the cross in the Gospels. It is in this way that the duality of the circumstances can be manifested. They are worshiping an Unknown God. But I would say that even if they are worshiping an UNKNOWN GOD as they are, they are worshiping Him, unknowing. Now if someone today is worshiping an "unknown" god, or an "unknown god", then those are different circumstances. For instance, in Acts 17:7 it speaks of "another king, Jesus". I know from the inscription on the cross that this is the (KING) OF THE JEWS. Just because they think that He was born to be a king does not mean that He was not indeed the one and only King. Similarly, the NASB for Acts 25:19 talks about "a certain dead man, Jesus, whom Paul asserted to be alive." The NKJ talks about "a certain Jesus, who had died, whom Paul affirmed to be alive." But interesting enough, the King James speaks "of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive." For me, the bottom line is that they were speaking of a certain dead Man, Jesus, whom Paul asserted to be alive. 1) Acts 24:24, "But some days later, Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him speak about faith in **Christ Jesus." John 14:26, "...**He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you." John 3:11, NKJ, Most assuredly, I say to you, **We speak that which We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness." From the heart, Ray |
