1 | Christ as advocate | John 16:26 | KenD | 71877
Preparing to teach this passage on 1/12 and just not quite grasping the meaning. Jesus as our advocate and intercessor is taught throughout NT, and I am just having a difficult time with this verse where He says He will not ask the Father on disciples behalf. Thanks for any and all input
2 | Christ as advocate | John 16:26 | Jesified | 71889
I wondered the same thing after reading your question, but I'll tell you what helped me. Find an Amplified translation and back up to verse 19 and read it through verse 28. If you ask me this is not referring to Jesus in the role of advocate or intercessor, it's referring to Him personally not being able to plainly tell the disciples that He's going to die, and between when He died and when He rose again it won't be necessary for Jesus to ask God for them. Remember, they thought He was going to be a King like David or Herod or Cesar, not a King as in the head Church/body of Christ. Therefore, if they knew He was going to die, then they wouldn't allow Him to go. Peter tried to stop the Pharasees from arresting Jesus (although he wasn't more skilled in melee combat). I pray that God opens your eyes and shows you what you need to know to teach this lesson and that you let the Holy Spirit guide you into all truth. Jesified |
