1 | Nathanael sitting under fig tree means ? | John 1:48 | Ray | 108068
Hi pineska, Welcome to the forum. I don't recognize the version that you quoted from in your question. One can find many references in the Bible about sitting under the fig tree. See 1Kings 4:25, 2 Kings 18:31, Isaiah 36:16. I like to think that Nathaniel was thinking about the Scriptures and praying while under his fig tree. Perhaps thinking of the peace and prosperity that would come when the King arrives. I compare John 1:48 with Micah 4:4 and Zechariah 4:10. John 1:48, "Nathanael said to Him, 'How do You know me?" (Jesus) answered and said to him, 'Before Phillip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Zechariah 3:10, "'In that day,' declares the (Lord) of hosts, 'every on of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and under his fig tree.'" Micah 4:3, "And (He) will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they train for war, And each of them will sit under is vine And under his fig tree, With no one to make them afraid, For the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken." He is the King of Israel. Micah 4:7, "I will make the lame a remnant, And the outcasts a strong nation, And the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion From now on and forever." From the heart, Ray |

2 | Nathanael sitting under fig tree means ? | John 1:48 | Dragonfly | 109034
I am of the opinion that there was a considerable distance between Jesus and Nathanial at the time and Nathanial knew that Jesus was too far away (physically) to see him at that time and in that place at the time it occurred. It is possible that they were in different towns isn't it?
3 | Nathanael sitting under fig tree means ? | John 1:48 | Ray | 109063
Hi Dragonfly, I think that it is possible that they were in different towns. Whatever the circumstances, Nathaniel was convinced that at the time before Philip called him no one could have seen him under the fig tree. Here is some commentary from MacArthur's Study Bible: 1:48 I saw you. A brief glimpse of Jesus' supernatural knowledge. Not only was Jesus' brief summary of Nathanael accurate (v. 47), but He also revealed information that could only be known by Nathanael himself. Perhaps Nathanael had some significant or outstanding experience of communion with God at the location, and he was able to recognize Jesus' allusion to it. At any rate, Jesus had knowledge of this event not available to men. 1:49 the Son of God!...the King of Israel. Jesus' display of supernatural knowledge and Phillip's witness removed Nathanael's doubts, so John added the witness of Nathanael to this section. The use of "the" with "Son of God" most likely indicates that the expression is to be understood as bearing its full significance (cf. v.34; 11:27). For Nathanael, here was One who could not be described merely in human terms. From the heart, Ray |
