My own view of Mary Magdalene before she met Jesus (and there isn't any Scripture evidence) that she was a rich widow, living in Migdal on the shores of Lake Galilee, probably somewhat depressed hence the evil spirits no doubt menopausal, seeking for a cause to espouse. She found in Jesus that cause. Augustine calls her "The apostle to the apostles" and I believe she was a strong evangelist. The church couldn't cope with this and so identified her with the prostitute who washed Jesus' feet- but there is no evidence for this. I suspect she was a very repectable matron and needs rehabilitating in the 21st.c! | ||||||

Dear Pusey, I do not find any singling out of Mary Magdalene with the title of "apostle to the apostles." There appear to be uses of this phrase -- especially in Eastern Orthodoxy -- to the women of Matthew 28:1 that Christ sent to tell His disciples of His resurrection (Matthew 28:10). Even then it is given as a description of their explicit function in that particular event. It is never intended as a title, let alone an office. We must be careful not to impose on history our own uniquely modern presuppositions. As we know from sound interpretation of Scripture, we ought not read into a text anything beyond what the writer originally intended to say. Your statement that the Church "couldn't cope" with Mary Magdalene is very odd. If I remember correctly the Church satisfactorily coped with the notions of Biblical inspiration, the Trinity, Jesus' virgin birth, the miracles of Christ, His resurrection, the signs in the primitive church, etc. They even effectively dealt with the more abstract notions of atonement, sanctification, justification, propitiation, glorification, etc. Furthermore, out of the teachings of the kyrigma the Church elevated the female gender to spiritual equality with men. With all that "coping" going on, don't you think it would be odd if they "couldn't cope" with Mary Magdalene being an apostle? Ma'am... With the lack of evidence in Scripture, tradition, or historical sources, sound reason would suggest that Mary did not hold the office of apostle. In Him, Doc |
