1 | What does it mean to "fall away"? | Luke 8:13 | DocTrinsograce | 197295
Hi, budderfligh... Welcome to the forum! To "fall away" means to abandon the faith. When a person goes through all the motions, but in the face of the difficulties of living the Christian life, returns to all those things that characterized their life in the world, they may well fit in this category. Read the parable of the sower in Luke 8. Abandoning the Lord for the world is a very serious indication that a person has deep spiritual problems. That's why the author of Hebrews uses such strong language. Better not to begin at all, than to lay one's hand on the plow and turn back. It becomes very clear what we actually love, by how we live. Thanks again for the follow up answer. Not trying to beat a dead horse here, just wanting to make certain I fully understand what you're saying because quite frankly, these are very serious verses that have always scared the heck out of me! I have a very dear friend who was saved at a young age. This person "fell away" or "backslid", whatever term you choose to use. I prefer to say that she lost fellowship with God for a time. This person later gave her life back to Jesus, repented, and now leads a stellar life in the Lord. No doubt in my mind that this person is now saved. If I'm following your line of reasoning correctly you're saying the person wasn't saved in the first place. I think the verse you gave me in Luke certainly seems to back that up but then I am left with the reality that I see from my experiences with my friend. I guarantee that the person in question would argue your viewpoint in that I have heard her testify many times of how the Sweet Holy Spirit wooed her back to her right standing with Christ and how the mercy and grace of our Lord and Saviour brought her where she is today. I am most certainly not a Bible scholar but that tends to bring the "once saved, always saved" discussion to my mind. Let me say that this is another point that I can't quite reconcile in my mind and is a can of worms that I'm not trying to open. I am reminded again at this point that we are told as Christians that we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, who is faithful and just to forgive if we ask for that forgiveness. I am still leaning towards the idea that this "if they shall fall away" is truly the unpardonable sin since it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance. Wow! That is scary! I've heard others argue that this is referring to Jews who believed in Jesus and then turned away from their belief in Him, going back to their old religious ways which kind of makes sense to me if you take into context the first few verses of Hebrews 6. Again, you will please forgive me for my unscholarly ways in this forum. Thank you for your comments. The verses in Luke truly did shed a new light on this subject for me as I never thought to associate them with this passage in Hebrews.

budderfligh, Good day to you and welcome to the forum. You've received some very solid council on this. While I don't view myself as a biblical scholar and we do have some here on the forum. But one of the things they all have in common is that they all have deep godly and biblical conviction about what they believe and teach. Meaning they strive to let God's Word speak for itself. They fit thier believing around and in God's Word says. Now none of us is perfect. Our relationship with God is a daily thing. It's something we gotta nuture on a daily basis. 2 Timothy 2:15. Look at 2 Peter 1:3-12 as a matter of fact read the whole chapter. This did allot to nurture my faith in my early days as a disciple of Jesus Christ almost thirteen years ago. Being backslidden, falling away, or losing ones salvation I don't know. Read Acts chapter 2 and Romans also. This I do know, that those who have truly made our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Lord of thier live it's not a matter of losing something. I say this because there is no power human or otherwise that can take you out of the hand of God. Now with that said one must take into account that we make choices everday. Good, bad and indifferent. We can choose to walk away from God and that happens more than I even care to admit. But we can repent. 1 John 1:9. Unfortunately people can reach a point that they will not change no matter what they are told or encouraged with. I want to highly encourage you to read 2 Peter 1 it say much about what it takes to nuture and cultivate our relationship with God. Take heart, God is faithfull even when we're not. In Him, lionheart |
