Hi pryorspride, From "I Never Knew That was in the Bible" edited by Martin H. Manser, Thomas Nelson Publishers. "Business This word is used today of an enterprise of some sort (the car business), or to refer to affairs or matters with which someone is concerned. In the Old Testament the KJV uses the word in the same senses for which we would naturally use it today. In the New Testament, however, the KJV uses it five times, in each case to represent a different Greek term. Jesus' answer to his parents' anxiety (Luke 2:49, KJV), "Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" is translated by the NRSV, "Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" The Greek means literally "in the (things) of my Father," an expression used repeatedly in the Greek papyri for "in the house of."" End of quote. The writer goes on and speaks about the other four occurances of the word "business". 1 Thess 4:11, "Do your own business," KJV, or "mind your own business," NKJV, NIV, and NLT. Romans 16:2, "assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you" (KJV). Acts 6:3, "appoint over this business" KJV is rendered as "appoint to this duty" (NRSV, RSV) and "put to charge of this task" (NASB). The Greek word in Romans 12:11 is spoude, which means "haste," "zeal," or "earnestness." The NASB has "diligence": the NIV, NRSV, and RSV, "zeal." Again, this material is from "I Never Knew That was in the Bible". From the heart, Ray |
