mbooker -- It is I who claim authorship of that infamous and cryptic phrase, "a good Baptist." I used it in Post 95092 in response to Post 95086 entered by a respondent using the screen name Vehoka. .... If one reads the post in the context of the post to which I responded, one should, it seems to me, have no difficulty with being able to discern my meaning. But my experience on this forum has taught me that there is nothing that escapes being misunderstood by at least a few of its readers. ..... So I will venture an explanatory footnote. User Vehoka had already admitted to being a Baptist. Now I am aware that Baptists, like Heinz food products, come in 57 varieties or so, but unless I am much mistaken, the doctrine of salvalvation by grace is common to Baptists of virtually ever stripe. The user had made a remark that struck me as possibly being an apology for salvation by works, whence came my post to point out that "a good Baptist" knows that salvation is of God's grace, not of man's works. If I did not subscribe to the statements of belief contained in the "Baptist Faith and Message," I wouldn't be "a good Baptist" now would I? Not a good Southern Baptist at any rate. In fact, I wouldn't be a Baptist at all if I rejected all points of Baptist doctrine. .... I trust this explanation will answer your question and assuage your consternation over what I mean by the term "a good Baptist." And, of course, one should not read into the word "good," as I have used it in this context, any suggestion that it has any connection whatever with self-righteousness or rigid denominationalism. --Hank | ||||||

Correction to Hanks' interpretation of my words: Hank, Never did I say that we are saved by our works. Please keep my words in perspective of the conversation. I mearly stated that God judges our hearts. We were speaking of our choice of actions as to how we handle correcting someone...NOT our salvation. I very much believe that although I choose a different way to witness or correct someone than you that God will judge you (your actions) by your heart and me by mine. In no way does that mean that I believe that salvation is by works. I actually busted out laughing at your response to the person who questioned your "good Baptist" comment. You are a caricature for sure. I can tell that you are an old white man. I guess as others have "misunderstood" your post...you have also misunderstood others. (Me in particular.) But you will never admit that...you will only try to rearrange your words to make me (or whoever) look like the villian...and you, of course, to look like you were "misunderstood" (...AGAIN!) I admit that I am simple in speech and not as "seasoned" as most on this board. However, I hope you are not foolish enough to think that you know it all and need no correction in any way, shape, or form. It would be sad for anyone to think that --- then they would be closed-minded and not able to learn from others. Also, just an FYI...you do write your emails quite condescending. I personally think that you were NOT sincere when you said "good Baptist"...I think you were being condescending (delibertly) but tried to tone it down to make it appear that you were misunderstood when someone called you out for it. That's what I mean by "rearranging your words." In simple English it's called "deceit". Deceit is deceit --- be it a doctine or otherwise. Therefore, I charge you quilty of the same crime that you charge the WoF. You deceitful heathern!!!! HaHa...just kidding Hank...but aren't you glad that God knows your heart? And that God judges your actions by your heart rather than "me" judging the condescending way that you post? You don't have to really answer me. I'm just giving you "food for thought". Keep me in your prayers Hank (I have a lot of growing to do)...and I'll do likewise. Your Sister in Christ, Vehoka (who is saved by GRACE and not by works.) (smile) |
