1 | Forms of address to God in prayer. | Matt 6:7 | reformeddave80 | 206465 | ||
This is an issue regarding prayer, and in particular the way to address God in this vital exercise. As someone brought up using mainly the KJV / AV, I have been accustomed to addressing God using THEE / THOU as opposed to YOU / YOUR. In my prayer life I seek to call upon God in an acceptable, reverent manner. However, as the common useage appears to be towards the more contemporary forms of address I am finding this to be an issue within my own prayer life. I know this may be a secondary issue, but I would appreciate some clarity on this issue. Thanks. |

Hi, Dave... Welcome to the forum! The more we study the Word, the more it surfaces in our thoughts and language. Although I find myself more and more using the ESV, the KJV still has great beauty to me. (My wife teases me for using the word lowring (Matthew 16:3) to describe the approach of bad weather!) Furthermore, we often hearken back to the past, when faithful men lived and breathed the Word. (Spurgeon said of John Bunyan that if you pricked him that he'd bleed Scripture.) Those men were using the vernacular of their own day. As we read about their lives, hearts yearning to be like Christ, can we help but emulate them? If I rightly understand your question, I'd urge you to not worry about it. Let your expression of reverent adoration of our Lord manifest itself in the language that flows from your heart. We'd be foolish to establish something like this as normative, otherwise we'd all be trying to use first century Greek! :-) If, for you, greater reverence is expressed in King James period English, go for it! Just be careful not to mess up all those pronouns the way the Quakers did. :-) In Him, Doc |
