1 | Christ doesn't know time of his return. | Matt 24:36 | DocTrinsograce | 202368 | ||
Hi, Victor... Welcome to the forum! This is one of the "hard sayings" of the Bible, one of those passages that is difficult to understand. It has been a point of deliberation by kingdom scholars since the gospels were penned. Two explanations have gained predominance in orthodoxy: 1. That Jesus, during His life on earth, was not in possession of that particular piece of information. This idea is predicated on the notion that Christ took on the limited nature of flesh as part of His incarnation. 2. That this information was not a component of what He was to reveal to men during His ministry. The second explanation has the fewest theologically problematic implications. In any case, the day and time became a matter of historic fact when it took place. In Him, Doc |

Hi, John... Not all of Matthew 24 has yet to be fulfilled. Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, "You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" (Matthew 24:1-3 ESV) This judgment against Jerusalem was carried out, Just as Christ foretold: "It is said that Titus wanted to spare the temple; but God decreed that it would not be spared. For after men had long walked and worked, and the Jews could not be moved, neither with threats or exhortations, to give up their fortified positions, the soldiers realized that the temple could only be conquered with fire; some of the men lit it afire. And in that hour the magnificent, exquisite and priceless building, which was celebrated far and wide, burned and was reduced to ashes. The priests must beg and entreat pitifully to keep themselves alive; but the grace of God and men had run out. Titus, so Hegesippus writes, stated: 'Now that their temple and services are gone, the priests are no longer needed.' This destruction of the temple occurred on the tenth day of the month of August." ----Yosef Ben Matityahu (Josephus) Josephus also wrote, "Now as soon as the army had no more people to slay or to plunder, because there remained none to be the objects of their fury (for they would not have spared any, had there remained any other work to be done), Titus gave orders that they should now demolish the entire city and Temple, but should leave as many of the towers standing as were of the greatest eminence; that is, Phasaelus, and Hippicus, and Mariamne; and so much of the wall as enclosed the city on the west side. This wall was spared, in order to afford a camp for such as were to lie in garrison , as were the towers also spared, in order to demonstrate to posterity what kind of city it was, and how well fortified, which the Roman valor had subdued; but for all the rest of the wall, it was so thoroughly laid even with the ground by those that dug it up to the foundation, that there was left nothing to make those that came thither believe it had ever been inhabited. This was the end which Jerusalem came to by the madness of those that were for innovations; a city otherwise of great magnificence, and of mighty fame among all mankind." In Him, Doc |
