1 | Why does Matthew indicate two donkeys? | Matt 21:7 | DPOAG | 185500
At Wikipedia.com - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Sunday it says that Matthew fabricated the element of this account of the triumphal entry by adding the donkey and it's colt so as to help fulfill his misinterpretation of the prophesy in Zechariah 9 (the correct interpretation, per Wikipedia, being that it was really only describing a foal alone as is indicative of the poetical style of that day). Matthew is the only gospel to indicate two donkeys I believe. What are your thoughts on Jesus riding two donkeys and the validity of the claim that Matthew fabricated that portion of the story to fit his interpretation of the propheshy? Here is the quote from Wikipedia at the website listed above: "Matthew quotes this passage from Zechariah when narrating the story of Jesus' entry to Jerusalem. His interpreting or even misunderstanding the repetition in the Hebrew poetry as describing two different donkeys: gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. is offered by some Biblical scholars as a reason for Matthew's unique description of Jesus riding both a donkey and its foal." |

2 | Why does Matthew indicate two donkeys? | Matt 21:7 | Morant61 | 185504
Greetings Dpoag! This is a good example of someone at Wikipedia not doing their homework. :-) The 'them' of Mt. 21:7 does not refer to the donkey and the foal, but to the clothes (plural) that were placed upon the animals. Matthew is not claiming that Jesus rode two animals! He is saying that Jesus sat upon the clothes that were placed upon the animals. The other Gospels make it clear that He only rode the foal. 3 | Does Zech 9 indicate one or two donkeys? | Matt 21:7 | DPOAG | 185506
Tim, It is very kind of you to take the time to answer questions. I didn't not even notice the fact that it says he sat on the coats, not the donkey. I guess that would have helped! My next question is do you find it curious that Matthew indicates two donkeys as Wikipedia alludes to as being a fabrication. Let me say it this way, do you interpret Zechariah 9 to mean that there are two donkeys or one donkey supporting that the poetic style is really meaning one donkey. Honestly this seems silly talking about one or two donkeys but I appreciate your thoughts. |

4 | Does Zech 9 indicate one or two donkeys? | Matt 21:7 | Morant61 | 185508
Greetings Dpoag! As Doc already mentioned, Hebrew poetry made extensive use of parallelisms. So, Zech. 9:9 is only referring to one donkey, the colt. Matthew's account agrees with Zech. 9:9 as Jesus only rides the colt, even though the mother comes along with the foal. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
