1 | Sabbath. | Matt 12:1 | kalos | 5085
Matt 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. sabbath (1) The sabbath ("cessation") appears in Scripture as the day of God's rest in the finished work of creation. (Genesis 2:2,3). For 2500 years of human life absolutely no mention is made of it. Then the sabbath was revealed (Exodus 16:23; Nehemiah 9:13,14); made a part of the law (Exodus 20:8-11) and invested with the character of a "sign" between Jehovah and Israel, and a perpetual reminder to Israel of their separation to God (Exodus 31:13-17). It was observed by complete rest (Exodus 35:2,3) and by Jehovah's express order a man was put to death for gathering sticks on the sabbath day. (Numbers 15:32-36). Apart from maintaining the continued burnt-offering (Numbers 28:9,) and its connection with the annual feasts ; (Exodus 12:16; Leviticus 23:3,8; Numbers 28:25) the seventh day sabbath was never made a day of sacrifice, worship, or any manner of religious service. It was simply and only a day of complete rest for man and beast, a humane provision for man's needs. In Christ's words, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath." (Mark 2:27). (2) Our Lord found the observance of the day encrusted with rabbinical evasions (Matthew 12:2) and restrictions, wholly unknown to the law, so that He was Himself held to be a sabbath breaker by the religious authorities of the time. The sabbath will be again observed during the kingdom age (Isaiah 66:23). (3) The Christian first day perpetuates in the dispensation of grace the principle that one-seventh of the time is especially sacred, but in all other respects is in contrast with the sabbath. One is the seventh day, the other the first. The sabbath commemorates God's creation rest, the first day Christ's resurrection. On the seventh day God rested, on the first day Christ was ceaselessly active. The sabbath commemorates a finished creation, the first day a finished redemption. The sabbath was a day of legal obligation, the first day one of voluntary worship and service. The sabbath is mentioned in the Acts only in connection with the Jews, and in the rest of the N.T. but twice. (Colossians 2:16; Hebrews 4:4). In these passages the seventh day sabbath is explained to be to the Christian not a day to be observed, but a type of the present rest into which he enters when "he also ceases from his own works" and trusts Christ. 2 | Sabbath. | Matt 12:1 | Makarios | 7648
"Sabbath (Heb. shabbath) (Num. 28:9; Ex. 20:8; Lev. 19:3; 23:3; Deut. 5:12; Jer. 17:22) Strong's #7676: The word derives from the verb meaning "to cease" or "to rest" (Gen. 2:3; Ex. 31:17). The Sabbath is the seventh day in the Hebrew calendar, or Saturday (Ex. 16:26; 20:10). God established this day as a time to rest because He had created all things in six days and had rested on the seventh day (Ex. 20:11). The Sabbath not only mirrored His own actions at creation, but it also was designed as a day to remember God, specifically His covenant with Israel (Ex. 31:12-18). In addition to this special day, the principle of a sabbath rest was also applied to the land every seventh year (Lev. 25:1-7)." (from page 277 of Nelson's NKJV Study Bible). Jesus' healings and teachings on the Sabbath enraged the religious leaders. Jesus revealed the rabbis' hypocrisy with the example of an ox falling down into a pit. Their outrage at Jesus' healing came from their own interpretation of the Law and not from the Law itself. The scribes and rabbis had thought through, categorized, and defined all the minutiae of the Law, but they had missed its central point. Jesus never prohibited doing good on the Sabbath. 3 | Sabbath. | Matt 12:1 | Searcher56 | 7653
You're right. The leaders have been adding to what God intended the Sabbath to be. Today, we have gone the opposite way - we do not rest and we have changed the day. Some will say they are doing good deeds to justify their actions. Cease any type of work - tasks related to your job, chores around your home, errands. Seek to become more aware of God's presence with you, and pursue encounters with Him rather than focusing on self. If you gather with others talk about Him, not your careers, children, causes and other concerns. Do not force anyone else to violate the Sabbath, by going out, being entertained and other activities. |

4 | Sabbath. | Matt 12:1 | kalos | 7655
"Are the Sabbath laws binding on Christians today? " "We believe the Old Testament regulations governing Sabbath observances are ceremonial, not moral, aspects of the law. As such, they are no longer in force, but have passed away along with the sacrificial system, the Levitical priesthood, and all other aspects of Moses' law that prefigured Christ. . . . Here are the reasons we hold this view. "In Colossians 2:16-17, Paul explicitly refers to the Sabbath as a shadow of Christ, which is no longer binding since the substance (Christ) has come. It is quite clear in those verses that the weekly Sabbath is in view. The phrase "a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day" refers to the annual, monthly, and weekly holy days of the Jewish calendar (cf. 1 Chronicles 23:31; 2 Chronicles 2:4; 31:3; Ezekiel 45:17; Hosea 2:11). If Paul were referring to special ceremonial dates of rest in that passage, why would he have used the word "Sabbath?" He had already mentioned the ceremonial dates when he spoke of festivals and new moons. "The Sabbath was the sign to Israel of the Mosaic Covenant (Exodus 31:16-17; Ezekiel 20:12; Nehemiah 9:14). Since we are now under the New Covenant (Hebrews 8), we are no longer required to observe the sign of the Mosaic Covenant. "The New Testament never commands Christians to observe the Sabbath. "In our only glimpse of an early church worship service in the New Testament, the church met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). "Nowhere in the Old Testament are the Gentile nations commanded to observe the Sabbath or condemned for failing to do so. That is certainly strange if Sabbath observance were meant to be an eternal moral principle. "There is no evidence in the Bible of anyone keeping the Sabbath before the time of Moses, nor are there any commands in the Bible to keep the Sabbath before the giving of the law at Mt. Sinai. "When the Apostles met at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15), they did not impose Sabbath keeping on the Gentile believers. "The apostle Paul warned the Gentiles about many different sins in his epistles, but breaking the Sabbath was never one of them. "In Galatians 4:10-11, Paul rebukes the Galatians for thinking God expected them to observe special days (including the Sabbath). "In Romans 14:5, Paul forbids those who observe the Sabbath (these were no doubt Jewish believers) to condemn those who do not (Gentile believers). "The early church fathers, from Ignatius to Augustine, taught that the Old Testament Sabbath had been abolished and that the first day of the week (Sunday) was the day when Christians should meet for worship (contrary to the claim of many seventh-day sabbatarians who claim that Sunday worship was not instituted until the fourth century). "Sunday has not replaced Saturday as the Sabbath. Rather the Lord's Day is a time when believers gather to commemorate His resurrection, which occurred on the first day of the week. Every day to the believer is one of Sabbath rest, since we have ceased from our spiritual labor and are resting in the salvation of the Lord (Hebrews 4:9-11). "So while we still follow the pattern of designating one day of the week a day for the Lord's people to gather in worship, we do not refer to this as "the Sabbath." First - the question was is there a command it the Bible stating to gather on the Sabbath or the first day of the week (this term is not in the Greek)? Second - Just because Augustine taught it does make it right. He and others have linked the Sabbath with gathering together. They also have misdefined worship. Third - I still believe we should follow all the Ten Commandments. The fourth was to keep the Sabbath holy - that is cease from work, which we should not do everyday (2Th. 3:6-15). The Hebrews passge does not fit. |

However - I have seen no one point to Scripture commanding that we are to gather on the Sabbath or even on Sunday ... so I still will ask the question. Also, I have not seen anyone prove by Scripture that the fourth commandment is no longer in effect. Just because Augustine said so, then Constantine issued an edict means that God said so. Again-I do not care what man says, unless they can show by Scripture I am wrong. |

8 | Sabbath-did you know? | Matt 12:1 | Chris | 7768
Written by JVH0212: "Q: "...by what Scripture do you not keep [the 4th commandment]?" A: The Scriptures are: Colossians 2:16-17 Acts 20:7 Acts 15. When the Apostles met at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15), they did not impose Sabbath keeping on the Gentile believers. In *Galatians 4:10-11*, Paul rebukes the Galatians for thinking God expected them to observe special days (including the Sabbath). In *Romans 14:5*, Paul forbids those who observe the Sabbath (these were no doubt Jewish believers) to condemn those who do not (Gentile believers). Heb 4:9-11. Every day to the believer is one of Sabbath rest, since we have ceased from our spiritual labor and are resting in the salvation of the Lord (Hebrews 4:9-11). " Steve, I saw these Scriptures on a previous posting about Sabboths. I adapted it a little, but JVH always does a great job with finding Scripture. If you know a better interpretation of these verses please let me know! GOD bless! PS I don't believe we are bound by the Law, ANY of the Law(including the 10 Commandments)! I try to love all people just as Jesus loves me; if I do that I will not do many of the things prohibited by the Law, on the other hand, there will be many things that the Law prohibits that will not affect me in the least and I am in no way required to observe them. Whether I observe some of the commandments or not has no affect on my Salvation! The point that needs to be made is that Sabbaths and Circumcision are 'eternal' covenant commands, so some ask why we don't observe them, guess what? We DO! Notice Paul states that we, "were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;" Also, notice JVH's last quote Heb. 4:9-10, "There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of GOD. For the one who has entered His(Christ) rest has himself also rested from his works, as GOD did from His." What is the rest of Christ? Salvation by faith NOT by works. And, if our works are over because of His (Christ) work we can enter GOD's rest, the perpetual state of Sabbath! So, we observe both these eternal covenants but in Spirit not in the flesh; because as our Lord said, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." Jn 6:63 |

The day of rest is not a salvation issue or even a major one. I do have answers that I am working on, in response to JVH. Nonetheless, we have linked the day of rest and gathering, when I do not see any link in the Bible. JVH did not point out any passage that covers this. |

10 | Sabbath-did you know? | Matt 12:1 | Chris | 7836
In defense of JVH, there is no passage in the New Testament telling us to observe a Sabbath DAY! In fact, the verses JVH cited suggest just the opposite, and if we are in a perpetual state of Sabbath(Heb 4:9-10), there is no single day in which we practice rest, it is practiced everyday. So, the issue is not mixing the Sabbath Day and the gathering day, but rather no longer observing a single day as the Sabbath and choosing a day in which Christians should gather together to encourage and exhort one another. The Bible seems clear that they chose the 'Lord's Day' which is the first day of the week, or Sunday the Resurrection Day. This is not a Biblical requirement or command, it is simply the day the apostles chose.
