I use the "Life Application Study Bible" copyright 2000 exclusively in teaching my adult class. I have a question after reading the Special Feature on the introductory page to Joshua, page 834. "Out of over a million people, Joshua and Caleb were the only two who left Egypt and entered the promised land". Numbers 14:29 indicates that those aged nineteen and younger at the time of the crossing of the Red Sea will enter Cannan. I assume that those who are older than nineteen and did not grumble would also enter Cannan. Please explain so I can explain to my class. Thanks, George |

Greetings Petals! Based on Num. 26:65, I would say that no one over the age of 20, except Joshua and Caleb entered the promised land. Num 26:65 For the LORD had told those Israelites they would surely die in the desert, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

There is a slight problem here that needs to be considered. I know that this is the standard answer, but if you look up the person of Eleazar the priest, you will find that he was installed as the High Priest after his father, Aaron, died. This is back in Numbers 20:22-29. Eleazar remains as High Priest until he dies at the end of the book of Joshua (24:33). That would mean that (1) either he was younger than 20 when he became High Priest or (2) he also survived but was not included in the count because the Levites were not counted in a census. Considering his high position as leader over the Levites (Numb 3:32) and the fact that he had an adult son by Numbers 25:7 (cf. Exod 6:25), it is likely that the second choice --he also survived the 40 year wandering--is the best one. | ||||||
