Hi, Melissa... Mourning for the dead was expressed at this time by removing one's turban and tearing one's clothing. Moses was warning Eleazar and Ithamar that they should not mourn the death of the sons of Aaron, for their death was a judgment by God. By offering "strange fire" they had dared to approach a holy God on their own terms, rather than on His terms. (That is just as dangerous today, too!) Regarding verse 9: I believe the general consensus is that the sons of Aaron had been drinking when they committed the transgression in verse 1. Regardless, it seems pretty clear that proper priestly service to the Lord could not conceivably be performed in an acceptable manner by men who were inebriated. In Him, Doc |
