1 | Where does the Bible say only increase? | Prov 3:9 | T'oma | 142625 | ||
Colin, your exhortation is accepted. “Stolen” was perhaps not a choice word. But, that stated, allow me to ask a question - Whose property was it that Abram gave to Melchizedek? Clue – it wasn’t Abram’s before he seized it. In Gen. 14, where this story is found, Abram and Lot had gone separate ways. Verse 12 explains the looters had carried off Abram’s nephew and taken Lot’s possessions. Did the looters take any of Abram’s possessions? Abraham was miles away with a small army of “helpers”. He got word of the raid, and he led the posse out to capture the bad guys. They did. Verse 16, informs us that Abram recovered goods (whose goods? NOT Abram’s). Before he returned home, he encountered Melchizadek and gave him a tithe of the recovered goods. Don’t forget, they were chasing down kings who had ravaged many and taken much spoil (verses 8-10). My point was (and remains the same) Abram’s tithe was from the spoils he gathered from those who stole it. If it wasn’t Abram’s to begin with, and it wasn’t, and it was stolen to begin with – from who knows who, it didn’t really “belong” to Abram. And, yes, the foreshadow of the precious body and blood of our High Priest --- T’oma |

T'oma, Again, his name was Abram, not yet Abraham. God gave Abram the victory; therefore, these were not "spoil" (a term found in no translation of Genesis 14) but "goods", goods that came from God as all good gifts do. You are incorrect to assert otherwise. I've answered your post as best I can. Colin |

NASB Hebrews 7:2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace. NASB Hebrews 7:4 Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth of the choicest spoils. |
