1 | What is the meaning of the word Samaria | 1 Kin 13:32 | litfire2000 | 11319
I have been studying about the beginnings of the city of Samaria. I'm a little confused as the city is named after Shemer which apparently means the settling or dregs in the wine vat. However the definition I have found for Samaria is watch station. How do these two meanings relate to each other?
2 | What is the meaning of the word Samaria | 1 Kin 13:32 | Makarios | 11320
Dear litfire2000, The word "Samaria" is first mentioned in 1 Kings 13:32. Strong's Exhaustive Concordance states the following for this word.. "8111 Shomrown sho-mer-one' from the active participle of 8104; watch-station; Shomeron, a place in Palestine:--Samaria." .... "8104 shamar shaw-mar' a primitive root; properly, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect, attend to, etc.:--beward, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep(-er, self), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch(-man)." Zondervan's NASB Exhaustive Concordance states, "Shomron (1037d); from H8104; capital of N. kingdom of Isr.:—Samaria (109)." As for Samaria's history.. "Samaria, City Of sa-ma'-ri-a, (shomeron; Samareia, Semeron, and other forms): (1) Shechem was the first capital of the Northern Kingdom (1 Ki 12:25). Jeroboam seems later to have removed the royal residence to Tirzah (1 Ki 14:17). After the brief reigns of Elah and Zimri came that of Omri, who reigned 6 years in Tirzah, then he purchased the hill of Samaria and built a city there, which was thenceforward the metropolis of the kingdom of Israel (1 Ki 16:24). Here the hill and the city are said to have been named after Shemer, the original owner of the land. There is nothing intrinsically improbable in this. It might naturally be derived from shamar, and the name in the sense of "outlook" would fitly apply to a city in such a commanding position. The residence, it was also the burying-place, of the kings of Israel (1 Ki 16:28; 22:37; 2 Ki 10:35; 13:9,13; 14:16)." Hello again, litfire2000! Here is some information on 'Shemer'.. "Shemer she'-mer (shemer; Semer, Lucian, Semmer): (1) The owner of the hill which Omri bought and which became the site of Samaria (1 Ki 16:24, shomeron). Shemer may be an ancient clan name. The fact, however, that the mountain was called Shomeron when Omri bought it makes one doubt that the city of Samaria was named after Shemer; the passage is questionable. The real etymology of Samaria roots it in "watch mountain" (see Stade, Zeitschrift, 165 f). (2) A Merarite (1 Ch 6:46 (31), Semmer). (3) An Asherite (1 Ch 7:34, A and Lucian, Somer), called "Shomer" in 1 Ch 7:32. (4) A Benjamite (1 Ch 8:12, Codex Vaticanus Semer; Codex Alexandrinus Semmer; Lucian, Samaiel); the Revised Version (British and American) "Shemed," the King James Version "Shamed." The Hebrew manuscripts differ; some read "Shemer," others "Shemedh." (Taken from the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia) "Samaria - A watch-mountain or a watch-tower. In the heart of the mountains of Israel, a few miles north-west of Shechem, stands the “hill of Shomeron,” a solitary mountain, a great “mamelon.” It is an oblong hill, with steep but not inaccessible sides, and a long flat top. Omri, the king of Israel, purchased this hill from Shemer its owner for two talents of silver, and built on its broad summit the city to which he gave the name of “Shomeron”, i.e., Samaria, as the new capital of his kingdom instead of Tirzah (1 Kings 16:24). As such it possessed many advantages. Here Omri resided during the last six years of his reign. As the result of an unsuccessful war with Syria, he appears to have been obliged to grant to the Syrians the right to “make streets in Samaria”, i.e., probably permission to the Syrian merchants to carry on their trade in the Israelite capital. This would imply the existence of a considerable Syrian population. “It was the only great city of Palestine created by the sovereign. All the others had been already consecrated by patriarchal tradition or previous possession. But Samaria was the choice of Omri alone. He, indeed, gave to the city which he had built the name of its former owner, but its especial connection with himself as its founder is proved by the designation which it seems Samaria bears in Assyrian inscriptions, Beth-khumri (‘the house or palace of Omri’).” Stanley. It may be noticed that the distance between Samaria and Jerusalem, the respective capitals of the two kingdoms, is only 35 miles in a direct line." (Easton Bible Dictionary) "Samaria is the only major city founded by Israel, the Northern Kingdom. Omri, the sixth king of Israel (885-874 B.C.), purchased the hill of Samaria for his royal residence. Shechem had been the capital of the Northern Kingdom until Jeroboam relocated it at Tirzah." ... "While the term Samaria was first identified with the city founded by Omri, it soon became associated with the entire region surrounding the city, the tribal territory of Manasseh and Ephraim. Finally, the name Samaria became synonymous with the entire Northern Kingdom (1 Kings 13:32; Jer. 31:5). After the Assyrian conquest, Samaria began to shrink in size. By New Testament times, it became identified with the central region of Palestine, with Galilee to the north and Judea to the south." ... "SHEMER (shee' muhr) Personal name meaning, “protection, preservation.” 1. Modern translations’ spelling of Shamer, the father of a Temple musician under David (1 Chron. 6:46). 2. Head of clan of tribe of Asher (1 Chron. 7:34) with variant spelling Shomer (v. 32). 3. Original owner of the mount of Samaria for whom Samaria was named (1 Kings 16:24). See Samaria."
