What did the Isrealites do to deserve the judgement they received in Egypt?

Interesting question, prayon! :) I do not believe that the bondage of the Israelites is a consequence of any particular sin or judgment on the part of God, but I believe that God allowed these conditions so that He could deliver this family, that had now become a nation (Ex. 1:6-7), from this bondage that occurred over the course of time (Ex. 1:8-14). It is interesting to note that the very first time that God calls the nation of Israel "His" people is in Exodus 3:7, and this statement of "ownership" occurs during this time of slavery. He takes these slaves as His own, choosing them from among all the nations of the earth to be His chosen people. It is also interesting to note that not only did the Lord deliver Israel from bondage, but they went from being slaves to the Egyptians to being the most feared nation on earth! (Joshua 2:11; 6:1). Greetings Nolan, So does that mean that we can suffer hardships by not doing anything to deserve it. And remember that most of our consequences we have to go through are because we chose to do the thing that the consequences are for, the Isrealites did not make any wrong choice. prayon

Hello prayon! Yes, I believe that we suffer hardships without doing anything to "deserve" those hardships, even though all are sinful (Romans 3:23). I do not believe that everything that happens to us is because of a consequence or result of something sinful that we have done. If you read in John 9, you will see that there was a man born blind, and "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him." (v.3) So this would be one example that would prove that not all the bad things that happen to us are a result of doing something to deserve those hardships. Everything happens in accordance with God's divine purpose and we will never know exactly why certain things happen, but God is in control forever. And I believe that this is the case for the Israelites in Egypt and how they became slaves without doing anything at all to deserve it. And we know God's purpose for putting the Israelites in this position- so that He could deliver them and make them into a great nation, His chosen people! So it is not because the Israelites (or the sons of Jacob) actually did something wrong, but it is because of God's divine purpose and sovereignty that they found themselves in slavery to the Egyptians, only to be delivered from that slavery by God working through Moses! Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |
