Hi, Parable... I think I follow what you are saying. Of course, there is a big difference between pragmatism and "pragmatic results." :-) With the doctrines of the authority, inerrancy, necessity, clarity, and sufficiency of Scripture being poorly taught these days, I tend to jump on any statements that seem to question these teachings. God has carefully chosen the words of Scripture. We need to take care, therefore, that we use language that clearly reflects the truth. In Him, Doc PS If you don't mind, I'm curious about your specific scientific discipline. We had, at one time, a forensic scientist on the forum. |

Language is half the battle it seems. My undergraduate research was in physical geo-chemistry, my graduate research involved imaging near-atomic level reactions in layered materials via dynamic high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and my professional duties involve laboratory experimentation in materials science and engineering, instructing undergraduate interns in educational outreach, and developing nanoscience applications for focussed ion beam technologies. I am an active member of a men's group dedicated to understanding the radical truth of the gospel by studying notable figures from Christian history, and for the past two years, I have been leading a divorce recovery class at my church, which has been by far the most rewarding service work I have ever done. |

Dear Parable, My background was astronomy and physics, but more than three decades ago! So I just barely followed! :-) Much has changed in those fields since those days. I'm afraid its been a long time since I was able to read periodicals like Physics Today with any actual understanding. I did get a tiny bit of exposure to early materials science in low-temperature physics labs... and there was cool stuff going on back then with the effects of high-pressures on ceramics. But I imagine that stuff is ancient history by now! (Drop me an email, please, if you wouldn't mind answering some pretty novice questions about what's gone on since.) As I began formal studies in theology, I rather assumed it would be similar to studying the sciences. I expected that the mastery of the terminology would take place as I studied the various methodologies, etc. I guess that sounds a bit naive. :-) At least, it sounds that way to me now! The wonderful thing about Biblically based theology is that we have special revelation in addition to general revelation. The nature of that revelation is linguistic. God Himself undertakes the task of presenting truth to humans via words. The implications of that are staggering! However, our insistence on our careful choice of words doesn't negate our appreciation of the incredibly profundity of truth. By the way, I'm excited about your use of Christian history. I am persuaded that that is the only way to really begin to understand the Holy Spirit's light in the lives of our brothers that have gone before us. That effort will equip us to properly deal with the issues of our own day. God bless you in your studies and in your ministry. I'm sure that others will join me in prayer for you as they read our words. In Him, Doc |
