1341 | 1 Timothy 5 | 1 Timothy | srbaegon | 27566
Recommendation........... Hello lilbits, Coming from a Plymouth Brethren background, I can understand your church structure with the inherent strengths and weaknesses. The best book I've seen on the subject of elders is "Biblical Eldership" by Alex Strauch. I have other suggestions as well, but I don't want to fill up the forum's database. Feel free to contact me at srbricker@hotmail.com. Steve |

1342 | why should a leader have passion | 1 Timothy | srbaegon | 34166
Good morning love4Him The Scriptures say nothing of an elder being passionate, energetic, or exciting. The qualifications in 1 Tim 3 and Titus 1 indicate a God-fearing man filled with the Holy Spirit. Steve |

1344 | difference betweenm Elder/Minister | 1 Timothy | srbaegon | 145827
Hello 247, It depends on your definition of the terms. The Biblical difference is this: elder--spiritual leader of a local church; minister--anybody who does something to meet another's need. Steve |

1346 | Pastoral and Canonical Epistles? | 1 Tim 1:1 | srbaegon | 206766
Hello tumbleweed, The pastoral epistles are 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus. "Canonical" has the idea of being a standard or being generally accepted, so it can have variations of meaning. For instance, you are thinking of the Bible as the canon of Scripture. I do the same. There is also a way the word is used to include the Church Fathers and the ancient church councils, because those demonstrate the orthodox (or true or standard) faith. Steve |

1347 | Timothy's Gifts and Title? | 1 Tim 1:18 | srbaegon | 206764
Hello tumbleweed, "Or what" might be the best answer. We know from Acts that Timothy accompanied Paul. Also we know Timothy was ministering in Ephesus for an undetermined amount of time. Church tradition says he was an overseer in Ephesus, and some commentators of the epistles to Timothy would agree. Steve |

1348 | Over-explaining simple verses? | 1 Tim 2:3 | srbaegon | 213718
Hello PaulD, Part of good hermeneutics is to assume the plain, straight-forward meaning of the text unless there is a good reason not to. Steve |
||||||
1349 | 1 Timothy 2:8-11 for disruptors? | 1 Tim 2:8 | srbaegon | 232277
Hello loavesnfish, Yes, Paul was correcting men and women who were behaving in those ways but not based on the presupposition in your post. Paul was not trying to implement Jewish worship as much as he was teaching proper worship according to God's revelation of himself. Steve |

1350 | ARE WOMEN CALL TO PREACH AND PASTOR? | 1 Tim 2:12 | srbaegon | 92955
Hello God's Prophet, 1 Tim 2:12 seems plain to me. She can preach and pastor children or other women--not men. Steve |
||||||
1351 | HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT WOMEN MINISTER | 1 Tim 2:12 | srbaegon | 92958
Hello God's Prophet, These women might be anointed, filled with the Spirit, and mightily gifted to teach the Scriptures. It doesn't matter. Let them use their gifts according to God's word. Steve P.S. As an aside about internet use, all capital letters in a communication means you are shouting. |

1352 | Biblical - women preachers/teachers??? | 1 Tim 2:12 | srbaegon | 120608
Hello frcvisionary, This has been asked before. Try looking for posts under 1 Timothy 2:12 or do a Quick Search. Steve |

1353 | So, what's your final answer? | 1 Tim 2:12 | srbaegon | 123683
Hello HISROSEBUD15, My great-grandmother was ordained as a pastor in the Assenblies of God. I know very little of her ministry, but I know of the deterioration in the family through the following generations partially because of this role reversal. There is no mistaking that in the local church leadership is male. You cannot get away from this fact. As Searcher56 has mentioned, there is a whole world of pastoring women. This is a great and needful work. Let me also state that there is also a whole area of witnessing. There is nothing that prevents a woman from sharing the gospel with a man. At what age should you stop from teaching boys? Good question. In our own church it would be around age 12, but that's only a guideline. Steve |

1355 | Can woemn teach/preach men? | 1 Tim 2:12 | srbaegon | 175026
Hello Fellow Pilgrim, There is a problem in saying that Paul's instruction here is only because of the Ephesian culture--the entire book can be said to be instruction only for the Ephesian culture. 1 Timothy becomes unimportant. Taken together with 1 Cor 12 and 1 Cor 14, a better thought is that women are not to be teaching men or taking leadership over men in church. This gives freedom to teach unbelievers, etc. outside the regular meetings of the church. Steve |
||||||
1356 | Can woemn teach/preach men? | 1 Tim 2:12 | srbaegon | 175027
Hello Fellow Pilgrim, I meant 1 Cor 11 instead of 1 Cor 12 in that reply. Steve |

1357 | Is it okay for women to teach men, such | 1 Tim 2:12 | srbaegon | 191556
Hello lyz, There is a difference of opinion, but 1 Tim 2:12 seems clear. And this has been asked before. Use the search function for more input. Steve |

1358 | God's plan of protection? | 1 Tim 2:13 | srbaegon | 232278
Hi loavesnfish, The idea of protection is there, certainly, but these verses are appealing to God's creation order. Men are responsible for being the spiritual leaders and protecting their wives (see also 1 Cor 11; 14). Beginning in Eph 5:15, Paul lays out what it means to walk carefully before the Lord. He does this by showing how God's intent of proper subordination works within the family (subordination not meaning subservience but understanding and fulfilling a God-given role). Steve |
||||||
1359 | Elder must be 'the husband of one wife'? | 1 Tim 3:2 | srbaegon | 5601
Basically, it has to do with your last phrase--faithful to his wife, being a 'one-woman man'. The passagein question has to do with the elder's home life, if conducted in a godly manner.
1360 | Why translate diakonos as deacon? | 1 Tim 3:8 | srbaegon | 49644
Hello DougB "Deacon" was used in those two passages to show that the correlation with elders/overseers indicated an office rather than the average person who was serving. Steve |
