722 | The Sermon on the Mount? | Matt 5:1 | prayon | 10535
The Sermon on the Mount was preached to the Lord's Disciples. It reveals the standard of righteousness that Christ requires of all who belong to Him (5:1). It also elaborates on what our Lord called His new commandment - to love one another. This revelation of a true life of holiness also creates in the honest heart an awareness of coming "short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Since it is impossible for the human nature ever to fulfill this high standard of inner righteousness, the honest heart will be driven to utter despair to Jesus Himself. He alone can cause the righteousness of the law to be fulfilled in our lives. The Sermon on the Mount can be, along with the Ten Commandments, be called the school master for our lives. prayon (exert from Matthew BSF lesson 7). |

723 | Don't sweat the small stuff? | NT general Archive 1 | prayon | 9748
Lionstrong,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Maybe you are right and part of the bible is false. And maybe they got it wrong about Jesus too. Maybe he only healed some of the people he is said to of healed. Maybe he didn't really walk on water. Maybe he is really buried somewhere and didn't rise from the dead. Maybe the men who rewrote the bible added a bunch of stuff that didn't really happen to make it sound more interesting. Lionstrong, it is called FAITH! "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not see" (Heb 11:1). Faith is being able to to know that the bible is the INFALLIBLE (exempt from uncertainity, fallacy or error) word of God. If someone does not believe it is the unfallible word of God, I question if that person should be answering posts on a forum that is based on the bible being without any error. |

724 | How can I obey Matthew 5:44 | Matt 5:44 | prayon | 9626
I have gone through the same thing and it is not an easy situation to be in. I still have trouble with it and have to pray about it after many years. Jesus told us to pray for our enemies. The one who can pray for their enemies can do anything for them. When you pray for them it is not only a gift of love given to them but it will allow us to see them through God's eyes. This helps us to love them and forgive them. Also, by praying for our enemies we can overcome evil with good. It is important to note that we can only do this by fully giving ourselves to Christ. By calling us not to retaliate, Jesus keeps us from taking the law into our own hands. When we pray for our enemies and treat them good then we are letting the Christ in us shine. This will be seen by others, including the person who has wronged us, and could lead them or bring them closer to Christ. It is our natural selfishness that makes us want to get even or see that person suffer because we suffered. I learned something a number of years ago that will help you now as well as many times in the future to come. What I use is a "God bag". Take a small bag and place it on the refrigerator (either physically or in your mind) and label it "God bag". When ever you have a problem, as in this instance forgiving someone, write it down on a scrap of paper and place it in your "God bag". Whatever is in that bag is His. He will take care of it and deal with it from now on. You may NOT have it back. Whenever you feel anger for this person remind your self that you can't be angry because you have already give the anger to God. Who would want to take back something that they had already given to God? It may take a while to get over the anger but I guarentee you this will work over time. prayon |

727 | Ahaziah a ruler at 22 or 42? | 2 Chr 22:2 | prayon | 9249
His reign lasted only one year beginning at age 22 (2Kings 8:25); the Masoretic Text of 2 Chron 22:2 gives his age as 42(Septuagint "twenty"; some manuscripts "twenty-two"). Taken froom the Eerdmans Bible Dictionary.
728 | Gen 6:7 and Num 23:19 contradictory? | Gen 6:7 | prayon | 9245
Nolan, the closest I can get to answer you is this from the International Bible Commentary - Scripture sometimes speaks of God changing his mind (English versions say repenting) but this is God's unmovedness while others move and change. The divine finger ever points to the same spot but man has moved from it to the opposite pole.
729 | Sixth day or Seventh day? | Gen 2:22 | prayon | 9218
Nolan - Gen 2:2b-3 states that "he rested on the seventh day from all the work He had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that He had done in creation."
730 | Mercy on Unbelievers | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 9217
God as far as I know will not have mercy on the unbeliever. The unbeliever has been given every chance to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior but have denied Christ. I refer you to 2 Corinthians 6:14 - "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship is there between light and darkness?" Verse 17-18 goes on to say "Therefore come out from them (unbelievers) and be separate from them, says the Lord and touch nothing unclean; and I will welcome you, and I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters says the Lord Almighty". Paul urged believer not to form binding relationships with unbelievers because this might weaken their Christan commitment, integrity, or standards. Although we believe that we can stand strong in out commitment God knows us better than we know ourselves. He said what he did because He knows we are weak and can easily be deceived. |

731 | Did David or Elhanan kill Goliath? | 2 Sam 21:19 | prayon | 9215
2 Samuel 21:19 states that Elhanan slew Goliath the Gittite. This statement clearly raises the question of whether David truly did slew the giant Goliath. The International Bible commentary states that one version states Elhanan slew Goliath's brother (see 1 Chron 20:5). It has been suggested that perhaps the name David itself may be a throne name or title, since 'dawidum' in the Mari texts means 'commander', and that his original name may be lost. But it is doubtful whether it could of been Elhanan.
732 | Who killed Saul? | 2 Sam 1:10 | prayon | 9214
Saul committed suicide rather than be killed by the Philistines. 2 Samuel 1:3-4 states that Saul was "leaning on his spear" which tells us that he di indeed kill himself. Saul asked the Amalekite to stand over him and kill him because death was long in coming and he didn't want the Philistines to find him alive. The Amalekite did as Saul asked and then told David that he had killed Saul.
733 | Who were the Nicolaitans? | Rev 2:6 | prayon | 9054
Good Question! Little is known about this group aside from the biblical references. They were a sect present in the churches of Ephesus and Pergamum. From the context of Rev 2:15, it would appear that they were people who abused Paul's doctrine of Christian liberty. It is believed that Jude 4 refers to them also. They appear to have attended the heathen rites and shared in the abominations there practised. Some say that they were followers of Nicolas of Antioch, one of the seven original elders, but if so, they falsely claimed that he taught such things so it is probable that it was some other Nicolas. It is possible that they were one in the same with the followers of Balaam (v. 14) because they both had a similar etymology "to conquer the people". prayon
734 | Was Abraham a Muslim? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 9004
Abraham was the son of Terah, a descendent of Shem. Shem is the ancestor of Isreal, and was rewarded for a special relationship with God. Abraham was known as the first great patriarch of Isreal - an Isrealite, not a Muslim. He is, however, revered by the Muslims and the Christians as the epitome of human faith. He has been called the pioneer of trust in God. Terah, Abraham's father, was portrayed by ancient rabbinic interpreters as a manufacturer and worshiper of idols, which goes with God's command to Abraham to leave his father's house. prayon |

736 | What does "a measure of faith" mean? | Rom 12:3 | prayon | 8984
Andrew, a measure of faith is just that - a measurement of faith. The measure of faith should be understood as the same as "gifts that differ according to the grace given to us" (v. 6) and corresponds to Paul's similar statements about gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4. |

737 | Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? | Ex 7:3 | prayon | 8946
Good question Hiram! Upon God ultimately rests the responsibility for the well-being of some and the discomfuture of others, and He is well able to bear it. In Exo 33:19 God tells us that He "will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and show mercy to whom I will show mercy. This tells us specifically that He will not show mercy to all. The Pharaoh is cautioned at the outset as to the consequences of non-compliance with the divine command. In addition, Exo 8:15,32; 9:34 states that Pharaoh hardened his own heart. Hardening of the heart is the choice of man. Pharaoh freely chose a life of resisting God. Pharaoh was a greedy man. The Hebrews were free labor for the Pharaoh. He was not about to let such a great resource go. Even after he did say they were to go he changed his mind and went after them to bring them back (Exo 14:5). |

738 | Why destroy Sodom and Gom if no God law | Gen 18:20 | prayon | 8920
I am not quite sure where you got the idea that there was no law violated. Many of God's laws were being broken in Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah are remembered as the wicked cities that brought God's divine wrath upon them. He destroyed these two cities because of the wickedness of the people. Both of these two cities are repeatedly brought up throughout the old and new testaments as a warning and sometimes as a accusation against the covenant people.
739 | Should a Christian be a Mason? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 8837
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! the Mason's or a higher order of the Mason's - the Shriners are a very secretive organization that proclaim, do and say things that are not consistant with the bible. I will give two examples, although there are many. BOUND BY BLOOD OATHS From the initiation rituals of the "BLUE LODGES" and through all 33 degrees of Freemasonry, every Mason in the world is bound by bloody oaths to maintain the secrets of the Lodge. These binding oaths are kept through the spirit of fear, because the penalties for betraying the brethren of the lodge include serious physical harm to the Mason. Look at them from the perspective of Christ's admonition. The oath sworn by the Entered Apprentice or first degree: "binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my throat cut across, my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea, at low water mark." The Master Mason swears,"under no less penalty than that of having my body severed in two, my bowels taken from thence and burned to ashes, the ashes scatter before the four winds of heaven" (Duncan's Ritual of Freemasonry, 3rd Ed., pp. 35 396, David McKay Pub., New York, NY) THE KING OF THE PIT OF HELL In the seventeenth degree of the Scottish Rite, or The Knights of the East and West Degree, after the candidates have completed the initiation they are given the secret password, Jubulum, and the Sacred Word, Abaddon. Here is the clue to the true identity of the Masonic Deity. It is revealed in the "Sacred Word" of this ritual, "Abaddon." In Revelation 9:11, we learn that "they [the demons and workers from hell] had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon!" Again, I must ask, "How could any true Christian dare to take upon himself that evil name as a sacred word?" the above came from information on a site called www.ericbarger.com/home2.htm I encourage all interested in learning more to visit the site, go to the search engine and type in Masons. I have not even touched the surface. prayon |

740 | Why couldn't the sons of Sceva exorcise? | Acts 19:16 | prayon | 8831
In Ephesus many engaged in exorcism and occult practices to make money. Sceva's son's were included in these. They were impressed by Paul's ability to cast out demons by the power God gave to them. They knew that Pauls power was much more powerful because it came from the Holy Spirit. They wanted this amount of power also. In verse 13 we notice that these exocists saod, "I adjure you through the Jesus that Paul proclaims". They did not believe in Jesus and therefore were not saved. Unless you are saved you can not have the power of the Holy Ghost at work within you. Therefore you do not have God's power to heal. prayon
