481 | Is Fasting a New Testament teaching? | 2 Sam 12:16 | prayon | 49747
Greetings Scarlet and welcome to the forum! Fasting is not a NT teaching. In Leviticus the Isrealites were commanded to fast on the day of attonement for sin. When David and Bathsheba's baby became very sick David tells us that he fasted. In 2Chronicles 20:3 Jehoshaphat called for a fast when his messenger told him that Edom was preparing a great army against him. There were also many other fasts mentioned in the OT. Some of them include: Ezra 8:20 Esther 4:16 Isaiah 58:3 Jerimiah 36:9 Joel 1:14 Jonah 3:5 Zec 7:3 I hope this helps. prayon |

482 | How were ppl saved before Jesus came? | Heb 11:6 | prayon | 49218
Greetings Amrit, To be forgiven for sin there must be a blood sacrifice. Before Jesus, this involved sacrificing an animal such as a ram, sheep, dove, ect. Leviticus 1-5 goes into each of the 5 different types of offerings in detail. Today is no different, there must also be a blood offering to be forgiven for sins. The blood of Jesus Christ was our sin offering. He sacrificed Himself so that we may be saved, putting an end to animal sacrifices. All through history since Adam there have been people who have sinned and have not offered a blood sacrifice. These people have gone to hell. prayon |

484 | Who is Molech? | Lev 20:2 | prayon | 48821
Molech was a pagan god to whom child sacrifices were made. Children were dedicated and burned to Molech at the Tophet in the Valley of Hinnon near Jerusalem. This practice is specifically mentioned in 4 passages in the OT; Lev 18:21; 20:2-5; 2 Kings 23:10; Jer 32:35. Some scholars have suggested that the term "passing over" children to Molech and "burning in fire" indicate a dedication of the children to the god's service rather than the actual sacrifice. Jer. 19:5 calls such offerings "burnt offerings" and Ez 23:37-39 calls the act slaughter and says the children were given to the god as food. The worship may of been of Phoenician origin. Deuteronomy explains it as the custom of the indigenous population of Caanan. The Isrealites practiced this type of worship about 160 years beginning in 735 BC. Josiah's reforms attempted but did not totally eradicate it. (Harpers Bible Dictionary). prayon |

485 | What does Hebrews 8 Mean? | Lev 17:11 | prayon | 48734
Chapter 8 in Hebrews is a comparison of the old covenant which was a covenant of law between God and Isreal with the new covenant of grace. Jesus states that He is the fulfillment of the law in the sense that God requires a blood sacrifice for sin. To be forgiven for a sin blood must be shed (see Lev 17:10-11). In the old covenant the blood of an animal was shed. With the new covenant the blood of Christ was shed for the sins of all. When Christ stated that He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it He was referring to the blood sacrifice He was to offer in order to fulfill God's rule that blood must be shed for the forgiveness of sins. Christ only canceled out the sacrificing of animals for sins, not the old testament. prayon |

486 | will the church see the antichrist reign | 2 Thess 2:3 | prayon | 48318
Greetings Flo, I believe, and this is my own personal opinion, that we will see the antichrist before the rapture but we won't be aware that he is the antichrist. We will see his reign but we will see it from heaven. The great tribulation will happen during the antichrist's reign but I believe that God in His infinate mercy will rapture the believers before this happens. prayon
487 | Disbelief after witnessing a miracle? | Matt 12:13 | prayon | 48317
Greetings chynna, Good question! First you must remember that the Pharisee' were only religious on the outside. The only thing that they were concerned about was their own agenda. When they saw Christ heal the man's hand they immediately saw him as a threat to their way of life and religious leadership. They knew that they would loose their status in the community. Isn' it interesting that men who saw healing as being a sin on the Sabbath saw no sin in plotting a murder on the Sabbath? prayon |

489 | Is the Bible filled with TRUTH? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 47985
Greetings aggie, You were taught the truth. Every word of the King James Version of the bible is the truth. Do not question your salvation because of this man! The bible teaches us (sorry I can't remember the verse) that we are to weigh every word that we hear with the bible and see if they are in agreement. If it is not beware! There will come many false teachers in the end days. If your new pastor is teaching you things that do not line up with the word, or telling you that the bible has errors then it is time to find a new pastor who's teachings do teach that the bible is accurate. In answer to your question, All bibles are filled with the truth. I believe that the Kings James version is a beautiful version to read. However, to study God's word I like either the New King James version or the New Revised Standard version. I believe they are much easier to understand. However, no matter what version they are the word of God! You can find affordable bibles in many places. I suggest that you start by looking to the left of this box under information. God Bless, prayon |

Greetings terry44! Excellent quesion! The evil or woe talked about in verse 7 refers to physical adversity not moral sin. The New King James Version refers to it as calamity. God is ruler over all. Our lives are sprinkled by both. We need the physical adversity to grow spiritually. prayon |

Greetings Talley and welcome to the forum! Many of the questions you will have have been answered before and you will find the answer by doing a "quick search". To do this look in the upper right corner and you will find the "quick search" box. For the answers to your questions for example you would type in "names for God" for the first search and then "7 seals" for the second. If you still have questions then please ask them. Also when you ask a question please ask about only 1 topic per question. It makes it less confusing to properly answer the question you have. Have a blessed day! prayon |

493 | History of the Book of Galatians. | Galatians | prayon | 47974
Galations was written by Paul about 49 AD from Antioch. It was written to the churches in southern Galatia founded on Paul's first missionary journey. The book of Galations is the charter of Christian freedom. Paul proclaims the liberty in Christ - freedom from the law, and the power of sin to serve Jesus Christ. Many of the first converts and early leaders in the church were Jewish. These Jewish Christians proclaimed Christ as their Savior, but they found confusion in being strict Jews who were brought up following the law and being free now in Jesus Christ. There were many arguments over where the law stopped and this freedom began. There were also controversy over whether Gentiles must first become Jewish proselytes and submit to the Mosaic law before they could become Christians. The Jewish believers could not understand how the Gentiles fit into the picture and how they could be going to heaven. Galations was written to put an end to all the false teachings that was undermining the NT doctrine of justifacation by faith and not by works. Hope this helps. prayon |

494 | what is the parable of the lost sheep? | John 10:16 | prayon | 47871
Greetings, In addition to what Mommapbs said I would like to add that the parable also tells us in Matt 18:13 that just one "stumbled" or "lost" soul is so precious that even as the Jewish shepherd would leave the flock of 99 sheep in the care of an undershepherd to seek one stray lamb, so Jesus, our Good Shepherd has come to "seek and to save". In the case of the Jewish shepherd, seeking in the mountains and the hills was so strenuous and challenging that when he finally found the sheep he was happier over the one who was found than he was over the 99 safe ones. So our Good Shepherd rejoices when we come home to Him. prayon
495 | introduction to ephesians | Ephesians | prayon | 47820
Greetings chandren, Ephesians was written to encourage and strengthen the believers in Ephesus in their Christian faith and to remind believers of their immeasurable blessing in Jesus Christ, and not only to be thankful for those blessings, but also to live a life that is worthy of them. Ephesus was a important political, educational, and commercial center. It was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean world during NT times. Its 1/4 to 1/2 million population included had its share of great preachers. Ephesus was the capital Roman province of Asia (Asia Minor, modern Turkey). It is best known for its magnificent temple of Artemis, or Diana, one the 7 wonders of the ancient world. The letter of Ephesians explains the nature and purpose of the church. Church is not meant to be a four walled building but instead the church of Jesus Christ is the people who love Christ and are committed to serve Him. Several pictures of the church are presented: body, temple, nystery, new man, bride, and soldier. The letter of Ephesians became a circular letter hat was widely ditstributed to many of the early churches. Ephesians was written about 60 AD by Paul from Rome during Paul's imprisonment there. The church at Ephesus was one of the most prominent of the churches established in about 53 AD during one of Paul's couragious journeys. It is believed that the gospel was first brought to Ephesus by Pricilla and Aquilla who were left there by Paul on his second missionary journey and then was more firmly established by Paul on his third missionary journey (Acts 19). The church was pastored by Paul for about 3 years. After Paul left Timothy pastored the church for about a year and a half, primarily encountering the false teaching of a few influential men, such as Hymenaeus and Alexander, who were probably elders in the congregation there. Because of these men, the church was plagued by "fables and endless genealogies" (1:4) and by such ascetic and unscriptural ideas as the forbidding of marriage and abstaining from certain foods. Although those false teachers did not rightly understand Scripture, they propounded their ungodly interpretations with confidence, which produced in the church harmful dissputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. The letter was not written to confront any heresy or problem in the churches in the area. Paul had spent over 3 years with the Ephesian church and as a result he was very close to them. The first 3 chapters are theological, emphasizing NT doctrine whereas the last 3 chapters are practical and focus on Christian behavior. Hope this helps, prayon |

496 | What does "gods" mean here? | John 10:34 | prayon | 47729
Greetings K80, In response to the discussion that Jesus was having with the Jews at the temple he referred them to Psa 82:6 "I say, You are gods, children of the most high, all of you..." (See also Exo 4:16; 71). He was referring to the judges of Isreal. They were called gods because they represented God in executing judgement. Jesus pointed out that God has always delegated Hes power and authority to chosen members of His people in such a way that they could be called "gods" in their own right. The "gods" of Psa 82 appear to be unjust leaders who neglected to uphold righteousness. Here He is again referring to the judges of Isreal. prayon |

497 | Compare secular music to Christian music | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 47603
I agree with D.D.1961, It is not the music in itself but it is the words that count. Many songs, but not all, support and push one into things that are not of God but instead promote Satan and his agenda. Christian music on the other hand promotes God and all that He stands for. With my daughter what I do is listen to the words to the song that she is listening to and decide whether they are appropriate. I do believe that in listening to Christian music that one can grow in their walk with Christ. prayon

500 | what happened to flood waters | Gen 7:24 | prayon | 46928
Greetings Kikikika, It did rain for 40 days and nights, however Noah and his family were on the ark for a total of 371 days. They entered on the 27th day of the 2nd month of Noah's 600th year (7:11). They disembarked on the 27th day of the 2nd month of Noah's 601st year (8:13-14). The rain cascaded on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights, then it rained lightly for another 110 days. We get this from verses 8:4 and 8:2 where it states that God stopped the rain on the 150th day after it started. For the next 74 days the water abated until the tops of the mountains could be seen. 40 days later Noah released a raven which went to and fro until the waters dried up on the earth. Then in another 21 days he sent out the 3rd dove that did not return. He waited another 29 days and removed the covering of the ark. In another 57 days he evacuated the ark. During this time the water slowly evaporated from the earth. (Everyman's bible commentary) prayon
