241 | Raven, do you want ALL the Law? | Bible general Archive 1 | Reformer Joe | 45612
You wrote: " The bottom line is the Law is the Law, whether for salvation, redemption, sanctification, justification, daily living, etc. If you are going to be under the Law for ANY purposes, then you must be under ALL of it." While I agree that by the law no flesh shall be justified (Romans 3:20; Galatians 2:16), what is your Scriptural support that the believer in Jesus Christ has NO use of the Law? In addition, how do you explain passages like this, which refer to the application of God's law to a Christian? " Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH." --Ephesians 6:1-3 Paul quotes the fifth commandment verbatim and tells the Christian to follow it. "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." --Ephesians 6:4 This is basically a reiteration of Deuteronomy 6: God's law again. James refers to God's moral law as "the law of liberty" in James 1:22-25; 2:8-12. The law is the mirror into which Christians must look to see where how their sanctification is progressing. God still uses His perfect standard to convict us of our sin, to show us what Christ-like living looks like, and it drives us constantly to the Cross when we are reminded over and over that we are saved by Christ's righteousness and not our own. --Joe! |

243 | The church as the pillar of Truth? | 1 Tim 3:15 | Reformer Joe | 42869
Yes! God has ordained that the body of Christ as the means for supporting the truth. In a very real sense that means that the church collectively is appointed the role of guarding and preserving the tradition handed to the apostles and preserved in the Holy Scriptures. Far too many people reject this truth in favor of a "just me and my Bible and the Holy Spirit" approach to Christianity. This is far from true, since God has established a communion of saints through which He preserves the truth. In short, the bride of Christ possesses the truth of Christ and passes it on to the succeeding generations of the church. Notice that the church is just the pillar of truth, not the truth itself. The church was never called together to invent doctrine or be a source of "new revelation" beyond the apostolic tradition. This tradition has been passed down to us infallibly in Scripture, but also codified (not infallibly, but reliably) in the historic creeds and confessions of the early church. The Bible is our only source of revelation and our only infallible authority, but God has sovereignly preserved both through the church. We are the household of God that Paul mentions in this verse, and it is our duty first to get the teachings found in Scripture right, and then to be a part of passing it on to others (2 Timothy 2:2). --Joe! |

244 | Do you forgive Judas? | John 13:11 | Reformer Joe | 42741
Since Judas' sins were not against me, but rather against Jesus and God the Father, he has done nothing for which it is my place to forgive. --Joe! |

245 | Is it ok to question God after a tragety | Habakkuk | Reformer Joe | 42315
What do you mean by "question God"? Do you mean question His existence, or rather question why He allowed the tragedy to occur? We do not see the questioning of God's existence or attributes as an option in Scripture: 'The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good.' --Psalm 14:1 However, we see in many places in Scripture where believers in God question why He is allowing things to happen that do not seem to fit with His character. For example, the prophet Habakkuk knows what God is like, about His goodness and His faithfulness. However, he asks the following question: "How long, O LORD, will I call for help, And You will not hear? I cry out to You, "Violence!" Yet You do not save." --Habakkuk 1:2 Habakkuk receives an answer, and I would encourage you to read it to understand a little more how God foreordains tragedy to serve His purposes. Other good passages to read are Psalm 89 and the book of Job to see the various ways in which believers in God question him, out of anguish and not seeing the whole picture like God does. What is common in all of these situations, however, is that the questioning is done from a faith in and understanding of God's character, rather than a doubting of God's providence. We see that kind of questioning with the Israelites in the wilderness, and God does not like that kind of questioning at all. For a better understanding of suffering and tragedy and why God allows it, I would point you to James 1 and Romans 5 and 2 Peter 1 for a biblical understanding of it. We may not have all of the answers in a given situation, because God hasn't revealed all the specifics to us in every situation; but we know that what we read in the Bible about God's chracter is 100 percent reliable, and that Romans 8:28 applies to the believer no matter what, as does 1 Peter 1:3-5. Hope this helps set you on the road to addressing your tragedy with God. Question God based on what you know about Him, but realize that Scripture is the place to find the answers. Lastly, remember that God is not required to fill us in on every last detail of what He is doing in creation, but we can trust Him to do what is holy and true and perfect. --Joe! |

246 | What's the importance of Old Testament? | Gal 3:24 | Reformer Joe | 41648

248 | When did the wicked laugh at Noah? | 2 Pet 2:5 | Reformer Joe | 41524
The verse above refers to Noah as a "preacher of righteousness." That is the only indication in Scripture that gives a sense that he said anything to those around him about the coming flood. Of course, it is only reasonable to think that a man building an ark far away from sea would bring some serious scoffing! --Joe! |

249 | Show in the Bible once saved always | Bible general Archive 1 | Reformer Joe | 41371
Here's some: "But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus" --Romans 3:21-24 (notice that last phrase, what form does justification take and how was it accomplished?) "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ," --Romans 5:1 (again, justification by faith, thanks to what Christ has done, and PEACE between us and God) "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." --Romans 8:1-4 (God accomplished salvation though sending His Son...an act that will not be "undone") "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life." --John 5:24 "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day." --John 6:37-40 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." --1 Peter 1:3-5 (we are protected by God's power for salvation) ...plus many more! --Joe! |

253 | Jesus as the way to Heaven | John 14:1 | Reformer Joe | 41141
Shana: A good place to start would be to ask them, since they say they believe in God, what is He like? Habakkuk 1:13 and Leviticus 10:3 give us some insight into God's character, and Isaiah 6 shows us how human beings respond when in His presence. Who are we and how does God feel about our sin? That is Romans 1:18-20 and Romans 3:9-18. If we don't have a clear grasp of God's holiness and our hopelessness in sin, the role of Christ doesn;t make much sense at all. So I would suggest that you start there |

254 | Is today the only day of salvation for a | 2 Pet 3:1 | Reformer Joe | 41109
Arnie: No it would not make God a failure. Humanity chooses to rebel against God. It is our very nature to do so (Romans 3:9-18). God's judgment of some glorifies Him as a just and holy God, and His redemption of others glorifies Him as a merciful God who redeems His creation and defeats Satan. 'Not to us, O LORD, not to us, But to Your name give glory Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth. Why should the nations say, "Where, now, is their God?" But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.' --Psalm 115:1-3 --Joe! |

255 | Never had a chance to reject Christ | 2 Pet 3:1 | Reformer Joe | 41107
Arnie: You wrote: "These suicide bombers have been taught from the time they have been little children to hate Israel and the western way, they have been taught a very radical veiw of Islam. They have never had a chance to come to know Christ as you or I have. Do you think you or I, brought up in those same circumstances, would choose Christ? I don't think so." Do you think that anyone brought up in a "Christian nation" would choose Christ apart from the Holy Spirit's intervention? I don't think so, either. The radical Muslim fundamentalists are indeed products of their environment to a great extent, but first and foremost they are products of their own sin nature. Their environment simply helps determine what form their rebeliion against God the Father will take. "THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE." --Romans 3:11-12 --Joe! |

256 | How can re-incarnation be disproved, | Heb 9:27 | Reformer Joe | 41083
Well, since she is the one making the claim that reincarnation is true, what evidence does she have (other then silly people like Shirley MacLaine SAYING they have lived before) that reincarnation is true? You might want to ask her if she believes that animals reincarnate into people and vice versa. You don't have too many Western people who claim that one day they will be a monkey or a rat if they are lucky enough. Try using Scripture, by the way. The Holy Spirit works primarily through the proclamation of His Word. Remember that sharing the truth is more than just an intellectual exercise. She is pre-disposed to believing any and every lie before embracing the truth of the gospel unless God enlightens her mind to the truth. --Joe! |

257 | Christianity and beliefs | NT general Archive 1 | Reformer Joe | 41079
I don't know how confidential that these answers will be on a public forum, but here goes: 1. Yes. 2. Jesus died to pay the penalty for my sin 2000 years ago. When I was 10 or 11, the Holy Spirit made me aware of that fact and persuaded me to put my trust in Christ alone for trhat forgiveness and for eternal life. 3. Presbyterian Church in America (http://www.pcanet.org) 4. I have not been confirmed in the Catholic/Orthodox sense of the word. 5. Prayer, sitting under the preaching of His Word, reading the Bible for myself. 6. Every Sunday. 7. That my right standing with God the Father comes from Him, by His grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone (His sinless life, substitutionary death on the Cross, and His resurrection). My sin is forgiven, and God has put Christ's perfect righteousness, earned during His life on earth, to my account. 8. My sins have been forgiven. I am indwelt by the Holy Spirit. I am able to please God (Romans 8:7; Hebrews 12:2). I am assured of eternal life with God because of what Christ accomplished on my behalf. I will not be going to Hell. In short, what makes me different from a non-Christian is that I won't be getting what I deserve, thanks to God's mercy (Titus 3:5). 9. A disciple is a follower of Jesus Christ. 10. Yes, I am a disciple of Christ...a very imperfect one, but a disciple nonetheless. 11. If you are asking if I have ever offended God, absolutely....daily. I cannot remember any specific examples of trying to prevent the message of Christianity from being proclaimed. 12. Of course. --Joe! |

258 | What's the importance of Old Testament? | Gal 3:24 | Reformer Joe | 40987
Oh, what importance there is to it! The Old Testament, just like the New Testament, is all about Jesus Christ! The human characters in God's unfolding drama in the Old Testament are but supporting characters in God's great redemptive history of humanity. Just flip through the New Testament, focusing on books like Matthew, Romans, Galatians, and Hebrews, and look how much the Old Testament is quoted to show that it spoke of Jesus just as Peter tells us (1 Peter 1:10-12). The Old Testament cannot be understood properly, unless we take into account that in its entirety the OT points directly to Christ, the coming Redeemer promised to Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:15 and to Abraham in Genesis 12 and Genesis 15 and to the psalmists (Psalm 2, 22, etc.) and to the prophets (Isaiah 53). The Old Testament is a Jesus book! For a very warm and revealing look at this truth, I recommend a book called _Christianity is Jewish_ by Edith Schaeffer. You can find or order a copy from just about any Christian book store, or from the usual spots on the Internet. It is a fascinating look at how the Old and New Testaments fit together, and anyone interested in communicating the Messiah to their Jewish friends and neighbors simply must read this book! --Joe! |
