241 | how can one bear fruit? | John 15:4 | Makarios | 220161
Greetings Pepay, The words "bear much fruit" can be found in John 12:24, 15:5 and 15:8. I interpret John 15:4-17 to say that we will only have life in Christ, and apart from Christ, there is no life. Only with this life (with Christ) can the bearing of fruit be possible. And we can only bear fruit by abiding in and with Christ. If you part with your life in this world for the sake of Christ (John 12:24-26), then you die to this world and are able to bear the fruit that you can only bear by abiding with Christ. Blessings to you, Makarios |

243 | Aren't there differences? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 220137
Greetings MAC702, There are a number of specific "hot topic" verses when discussing women in ministry, including 1 Cor. 14:34 (keep silent), 1 Peter 3:7 (weaker), and, in my opinion, 1 Cor. 12:11 (Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to each one individually as He wills). As for 1 Cor. 14:34, if you believe that this verse exposits a biblical prohibition against women in ministry, then the most stolid line of thinking for this interpretation is rooted in the biblical definition of family, marriage and the order of creation after Adam and Eve. On the other hand, if you believe that this verse would best be interpreted in a 1st century cultural sense that is not applicable universally and for all time, then your line of thinking almost certainly would stem from Galatians 3:28 and possibly 1 Cor. 12:11. As for 1 Peter 3:7, the "weaker" element spoken of in relation to women would almost certainly be speaking of 'weaker physically' since such verses as Gal. 3:28 indicate that women are definitely equal in a spiritual capacity to men. So, that leaves us with 1 Cor. 12:11 and how the Holy Spirit apportions spiritual gifts to each and every believer. If preaching/teaching is a spiritual gift (Ephesians 4:11), then does the Holy Spirit check gender before He "apportions to each one individually as he wills"? I would not presume that the Holy Spirit would necessarily limit the gift of preaching/teaching to men alone. Blessings to you, Makarios |

244 | Ezra work | Ezra 7:10 | Makarios | 220136
Greetings again Combslatoya, As for Ezra's work in regards to the Jews, Ezra 7:10 describes his calling, and Nehemiah 8 shows that he fulfilled his calling in first leading the 2nd wave of Jews back to Israel, and also in teaching the Israelites from the book of the law of Moses. Blessings to you, Makarios |

245 | Who was Ezra? | Ezra 7:10 | Makarios | 220134
Greetings Combslatoya! You ask, "Who was Ezra?" Ezra 7:10 "For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel." (ESV) Ezra led the second wave of exiles from Babylon back to the land of Israel (Ezra 8), and he taught the people from the book of the law of Moses (Nehemiah 8). Blessings to you, Makarios |

246 | did jesus get keys of hades after death? | Rev 1:8 | Makarios | 220022
Greetings Zoebear, Concerning the Revelation passage, I will repost: "Last Things, Intermediate State—See Isa 14:9, note; Lk 8:31, note; 16:19-26, note. Hades is the New Testament counterpart to Sheol in the Old Testament. Some interpreters believe Hades refers to the general realm of the dead. They believe the statement is that Christ holds the keys to death itself and to the realm of the dead. All people will appear before the great white throne, the only judgment, at which both believers and unbelievers will be judged. Death does not hold the last word about human existence. When it has closed its doors upon a life, Christ still holds the keys to death and opens the way for believers into paradise. For believers, it is comforting to know Christ has the final word. Some see Hades here refer to the intermediate state for unbelievers, corresponding in this view to paradise for believers. Hades will yield to the authority of Christ and deliver up the dead therein to the judgment of the great white throne (Rev 20:13). According to this view, the Great White Throne is a judgment only for unbelievers (Rev 20:11). Mt 25:31-33; 2 Co 5:10; and Rev 20:4 are thought to describe separate and different judgments." (Disciple's Study Bible) "The keys of Hades and of Death describes Christ’s authority over those who have died physically and over their present resting place, which will be emptied and destroyed at the time of the great white throne judgment (20:11–15)." (Nelson NKJV Study Bible) "1:18 the keys of death and of Hades. The keys denote the authority of Christ over physical death and Hades, the place that temporarily holds the immaterial part of the unbeliever between death and the ultimate casting into the lake of fire (see 20:14)." (Ryrie Study Bible) "keys of death and of Hades. Absolute control over their domain" (Zondervan NASB Study Bible) "I am he that liveth, and was dead—I am Jesus the Savior, who, though the fountain of life, have died for mankind; and being raised from the dead I shall die no more, the great sacrifice being consummated. And have the keys of death and the grave, so that I can destroy the living and raise the dead. The key here signifies the power and authority over life, death, and the grave. This is also a rabbinical form of speech. In the Jerusalem Targum, on Genesis 30:22, are these words: “There are four KEYS in the hand of God which he never trusts to angel or seraph. 1. The key of the rain; 2. The key of provision; 3. The key of the grave; and 4. The key of the barren womb.” In Sanhedrin, fol. 113, 1, it is said: “When the son of the woman of Sarepta died, Elijah requested that to him might be given the key of the resurrection of the dead. They said to him, there are three KEYS which are not given into the hand of the apostle, the key of life, the key of the rain, and the key of the resurrection of the dead.” From these examples it is evident that we should understand , hades, here, not as hell, nor the place of separate spirits, but merely as the grave; and the key we find to be merely the emblem of power and authority. Christ can both save and destroy, can kill and make alive. Death is still under his dominion, and he can recall the dead whensoever he pleases. He is the resurrection and the life." (Adam Clarke Commentary) "the keys of hell [Hades] and of death—The order is reversed in the earliest manuscripts. The “keys” are symbolic of authority; the one who has the keys opens and shuts the gates at will (Ps. 9:13, 14; Isa. 38:10; Matt. 16:18). Christ now has authority over death and Hades." (New Commentary on the Whole Bible: NT) I have found that the theory that Jesus's living spirit went to Hades to obtain the 'keys of Hades' is loosely attributed to a particular interpretation of 1 Peter 3:18-20, Colossians 2:14-15 and Luke 16. But such an interpretation is not expressly stated as such within scripture, and therefore, will only remain just that - an interpretation, or opinion, in the minds of many who try to read less into the text then what is actually stated. 249 | Controversy over Paul's missionary work | Acts 13:46 | Makarios | 219515
Greetings JMoon03, Acts 13:44-14:4 shows that Paul and Barnabas realize that they are called also to be "a light to the Gentiles" (v. 47), since God "had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles" (14:27, NKJV). It is of no coincidence then, that the very next Chapter, Acts 15, chronicles the Council of Jerusalem, and how the church addresses the controversies of legalism, how to handle Gentile believers, the testimony of Paul and Barnabas, and the decision of the Council in regards to Gentile believers. 250 | Lunch vs meal in Luke 11.37 | Luke 11:37 | Makarios | 219510
Greetings Rick! Luke 11:37 is an interesting verse: the translation God's Word (1995) renders the Greek aristao as "lunch" also, while the 1912 Weymouth NT has "breakfast" and the Amplified says "dinner." Most translations state "to dine" or "meal." Upon further review of Strong's G709, Strong's Concordance (quoted from E-Sword Bible software) says "From G712; to take the principal meal: - dine." So, if the translators took a particular approach toward rendering this passage to define the meal as "the principal meal", then that could explain what appears to be a little bit of confusion in translating the specific meal intended in this verse. Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible states, "To dine with him - The Jews, as well as the Greeks and Romans, had but two principal meals. The first was a slight repast, and was taken about ten or eleven o’clock of our time, and consisted chiefly of fruit, milk, cheese, etc. The second meal was partaken of about three o’clock P. M., and was their principal meal. The “first” is the one here intended." But I believe that it is probably a bit more 'interpretive' to define the actual meal here rather than to just call it a 'meal', even though the context of the verse indicates that this meal is, in fact, a 'principal meal' of the day. 252 | how is conspiracy like a treaty ? | Is 8:12 | Makarios | 219366
Greetings Losafollower, Isaiah 8:12 is difficult to understand without the surrounding context. The people of Judah were in constant fear of an invasion from both Assyria and Israel, since both Assyria and Israel conspired together (Isaiah 7:1-2) to terrify Judah. But Isaiah told the people of Judah to trust in God alone (8:13), and not to rely on any foreign power to ally with them, since God alone would deliver them (Isaiah 37:36). "Form a plan, and it shall be thwarted; make a resolve, and it shall not be carried out, for "With us is God!" (Isaiah 8:10) NAB God would eventually would thwart the conspiracy between Israel and Assyria (Isaiah 37:36; for the conspiracy, see: 7:1-2), but He first sent Isaiah to tell Ahaz, King in Jerusalem (Judah), not to ally with Assyria (2 Kings 16:5-18; 2 Chronicles 28:16-21). Isaiah's warning against allying with Assyria was considered as treason because Isaiah did not support Judah's national policies (King Ahaz). He called the people to commit themselves first to God and then to the king. God alone is our shelter and hiding place (Isaiah 4). So, "Do not call for a treaty every time these people call for a treaty".. Do not put your trust in a foreign power who may be allied with your enemy, betray you, and hand you to your enemy: put your trust in God alone, and He will deliver you. Blessings to you, Makarios |

253 | Unforgiveable sin. | Luke 12:10 | Makarios | 219302
Greetings ChicagoChick, You ask, "Why is blasphemy against the Son forgivable, but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit the unforgivable sin?" Related verses: Mark 3:29, Luke 12:10; Matt. 12:31-32 "Chapter 12:24-37. The Unpardonable Sin" "This is told also in Mk 3:22-30, Lk 11:14-26; 12:8-10. Note that the Pharisees, as heartily as they hated Jesus, did not deny his miracles, which were too numerous and too well-known to deny. Though the miracles were entirely benevolent in their nature, yet so hardened and hypocritical were the Pharisees that they attributed them to Satanic origin. Such vile and devilish accusations were evidence of a nature almost beyond redemption. This may be the import of Jesus' words, a condition of heart to which they were perilously near. In Luke 12:10 the unpardonable sin is connected with the denial of Christ. Jesus seems to make a distinction between sin against himself, and sin against the Holy Spirit, 32. Quite commonly the Unpardonable Sin is understood thus: rejecting Christ, while as yet he was in the flesh, his work unfinished, when even his disciples did not understand him, was forgivable. But after his work was completed, and the Holy Spirit was come,-then, in full knowledge, deliberate final rejection of the Holy Spirit's offer of Christ would constitute the "eternal sin which hath never forgiveness." Similar sin is spoken of in Heb 6:6; 10:26 and 1 John 5:16. .." [Quoted from pg. 347, Halley's Bible Handbook, Inc., Twenty-Third Edition, copyright 1962] Blessings to you, Makarios |

255 | Why was not the man accused of adultery. | John 8:1 | Makarios | 219208
Greetings Fireout57, John 8:3-11 is about a woman caught in the very act of adultery who is taken before Jesus by scribes and the Pharisees. The scribes and the Pharisees attempted to use situations to test Jesus, and Jesus uses this situation to teach them that they are all sinners, and in need of a Savior. It would be irrelevant if they dragged out the man with whom the woman was in the act of committing adultery with, since the same application and result would apply. Blessings to you, Makarios |
