682 | what does god mean by i bare fruit | Matt 7:17 | Hank | 154418
smurf-renee: The biblical test of a prophet has always been the conformity of his teaching to the Scriptures: "If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord" (1 Cor. 14:37). See also Deut. 13:1-5 in which Scripture warns against following a false prophet, saying, Thou shalt not hearken unto the voice of that prophet...[but] ye shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him. Jesus in the Matthew 7:15-20 narrative again warns to beware of false prophets whom you will know by their fruits. "Their fruits" refers to their actions and to the doctrines they espouse and proclaim. In this passage Jesus draws a contrast between two kinds of trees and the fruit they produce. "Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit" -- good produces good and bad produces bad. Thus the normal and consistent production of fruit, whether it is good or bad, in a person's life becomes a clear reflection of whether that person's life is God-centered or world-centered, of whether he is regenerate or unregenerate. Verse 19 of this passage says, Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. The terrible phrase "cast into the fire" is a picture of the eternal punishment of the unregenerate in hell. ...... Galatians 5:16-26 lists the works (fruit?) of the flesh followed by a list of the fruit of the Spirit. Paul notes in vs. 24 that they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts [its passions]. --Hank.
683 | Does God help those who help themselves? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 154415
Starhigh: No, "God helps those who help themselves" is not in Scripture. It is one of those "phantom verses" which, along with others such as "Cleanliness is next to godliness, have made their way into the canon of folk-lore, but they are not in the canon of Scripture. Actually Scripture teaches the opposite. Consider Jeremiah 17:5: "Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD." The idea that God helps those who help themselves is works-based doctrine. It is not a doctrine of God's grace, a doctrine that clearly is taught in the New Testament: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." (Ephesians 2:8). --Hank

Kennyittis: According to the "Ozark Compendium of Folk Medicine," the utterance of the words holocolumba and holocabola is symptomatic of a rare but benign attack of kennyitis, an inflammation of the kenny gland located in the guadacanal of the cerebrum. The treatment of choice is the consumption of three gallons of sassafras tea generously laced with wildflower honey. --Hank

faron, I think you know perfectly well what I was referring to, which was your vulgar usage in Post 153745 of a slang term for urination and, to make bad matters worse, you applied it to the Holy God. 691 | Methods of translation | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 152609
lionheart: Possibly by "methods used in translating" you may be thinking of (1) literal, word-for-word formal translation, such as the traditional King James Version, and more modern translations, such as New American Standard Bible and New King James Version. ..... (2) Dynamic equivalence -- thought-for-thought -- versions, such as New International Version and New Living Translation. ..... The former method seeks to render into English (or whatever the receptor language may be) as nearly as possible a transparency of the original language. The latter follows no such constraints but seeks to reproduce the thought and (assumed?) meaning of the original writers by the use of paraphrase. ..... Each method has its champions and each has its talking points. It has been argued that a formal, literal translation is more accurate and freer of translator bias than dynamic equivalence, or paraphrastic, versions, but they have a tendency to be choppy in places and not flow as well as natural English should. Personally, I don't find this to be true with certain literal versions, such as the KJV, NKJV and ESV (English Standard Version). ..... The major talking point for the paraphrased versions seems to be the claim that they are written in more natural English and are thus clearer and easier to read. Again, speaking personally, I don't necessarily agree. ...... Anyone possessing average intelligence and reading ability can, if he is willing to expend a reasonable amount of time and effort, teach himself to read the literal translations easily -- even the King James Bible. As one who cut his teeth on the exquisite beauty of the King James, its majestic music and poetry, it has been impossible for me to divorce myself from this masterpiece of English literature. Moreover, I don't want to trash the King James in favor of a newer and lesser version. I say "lesser" because no version since 1611 has been able to surpass or even equal the King James in overall excellence. The English language has undergone numerous and dynamic changes in the last 400 years. Gone forever are many of the stately expressions and economy of language that characterize the King James Bible. It is the only translation in English of any work that countless scholars have called a masterpiece. It has profoundly influenced and molded the thoughts of both commoners and kings, of laymen and clergy, of the statesmen and pioneers who settled and founded America, and of farmers in the field and men of letters in the ivy league. ...... One who unwisely sets aside the King James Bible in preference to the newest translation hot off the press is depriving himself of a rare treasure which is his for the taking. ..... Lionheart, I'm aware that I've "answered" more than you asked, but I hope you don't mind the "free bonus" I've thrown in! --Hank
692 | Raca what does it mean? | Matt 5:22 | Hank | 152580
Gomer371: The word you inquired about, 'raca' appears in Matthew 5:22. The passage reads, in the KJV, as follows: "But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." ..... Raca was a Hebrew or Aramaic expression of contempt. It has been translated 'vain fellow' or 'empty head.' The context of this verse compels one to conclude that 'raca' was a somewhat weaker word than the Greek 'moros' that follows and is translated 'thou fool.' Please note that the penalty is greater for 'thou fool' (Gr. moros) than for raca. 'Thou fool' (moros) means 'stupid' and from moros comes the English word 'moron.' ...... 'Hell fire' in this passage translates the Greek 'Gehenna' which refers to the valley of Hinnom at Jerusalem, where fires provided a powerful and graphic picture of the ultimate destruction of hell and the lake of fire -- not a pretty picture by any means. ...... Evidently the thrust and meaning of this verse is this: If one makes light of his fellowman (raca), he will be in danger of slander before the council, i.e., the Jewish religious council called the Sanhedrin. But if one makes malicious, bitter, damning statements (moros: thou fool!) to his brother, he will actually be in danger of hell fire, as the passage clearly says. ...... It is a lesson on that "unruly evil, full of deadly poison" that no man can tame: the tongue, "a fire, a world of iniquity... that defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell." (See James 3:6-8) --Hank
693 | 1 Cor. 2:2 | 1 Cor 2:1 | Hank | 152185
Kingschild: The text that surrounds 1 Cor. 2:2 makes clear what Paul's focus was in coming to the Corinthians. He did not come "with excellency of speech" or "with enticing words of man's wisdom (see vss. 1 and 4 of 1 Cor. 2). But he came instead, having determined to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. His focus was on Jesus Christ -- His Person, and on Him crucified -- His finished work of redemption on the cross. That is the focal point, the centerpiece if you will, of all Scripture: Jesus Christ and His work of redemption. It is the focal point and central message of the church, and the focal point and witness of regenerate believers. All else is merely exposition. --Hank

697 | SHould christians get S.S. disability | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 151301
favorwithGod: To my knowledge the Bible is silent on the subject of Social Security disability. This is a civil issue per se, not a theological issue. If a Christian is covered by Social Security and meets the administration's criteria for disability, I see no religious, moral or legal reason why he could not or should not receive whatever compensation he is entitled to. ..... If, on the other hand, he became party to a fraudulent scheme to receive compensation to which he was not legally entitled, that would be quite wrong. It would involve the breaking of two of the Ten Commandments: The eighth by stealing, and the ninth by lying. ....... Your question is interesting and unusual. May I ask what prompted it? --Hank
698 | Mom, grandma, sister all in Satans hands | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 151276
Jesusfreak: Regeneration is a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit. It is accomplished solely by the power of the Holy Spirit through the instrumentality of the word of God. Therefore, your role in your loved one's spiritual lives is limited to two things: You can be the messenger who brings the message of the gospel of Christ to them. And you can pray for them. But don't take either role lightly. The gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16), and effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much (James 4:16). ..... While is is probable that your post was written with fervor and under some emotional strain, I still think it appropriate to enjoin you not to use on this Forum such coarse expressions as the one that appears in all caps in your post. 700 | And can we accept this challenge? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 151128
Aixen, I appreciate your thoughts; I truly do; and the soft words in which they are clothed. Not only you and I but others on the Forum as well have agonized over the problems that continue to ensue from this fascination of one user with capitalization. This situation has been going on for years, and for years I viewed it as little more than a harmless but pointless preoccupation. But this preoccupation has led to the invention of a theory about the Holy Spirit/holy spirit, which is clearly an adulteration of sound teaching. The user has been admonished by a large number of Forum users to stop posting on this unorthodox theory. and to devote himself to other topics instead of continuing with the one theme, capitalization, that has dominated his posts from the beginning. Other users time and time again have made efforts to dissuade him in his one-man pursuit of interpretation through capitalization. Thus far all efforts to "restore such an one" have produced no measurable results. I believe that a sufficient number of Forum users have met the challenge to "restore such an one" by the only means available short of filing abuse reports and let the Lockman Foundation decide how they want to handle the problem with this user. I will add this. Should a brand-new user come on this Forum teaching a "Holy Spirit/holy spirit" theory or any other theory unsupportable by Scripture, he would be dealt with swiftly, even to the point of revocation of his privilege to post if such a measure became the only way to contain him. --Hank
